I was at a loose end last night and happened upon Hard Target starring Van Damme on TV. Not expecting much, I was treat to gun fights whilst surfing a motorbike, slow motion doves, mullets, massive explosions, diving through the air whilst shooting and every action cliche going. He even punches a snake out.
It is now up there with Schwarzenegger's Commando, highly recommended unless you have any better suggestions.

Agreed. Hard Target is indeed amazing.

Machete is worth a look if you like this.

Die Hard - which is also the best Christmas film.

Hard Boiled is better. In fact most of John Woo's Hong Kong output. But Hard Target is very good fun, and has some amazing mullets.

Double Impact is truly awesome. For a start you get 2 Van Damme's in one film, some 'confusion' in the bedroom, boats, fights...

No way, Mickey O' Rourke and Dennis Rodman are better than 2 Van Dammes.

I'm sorry but whilst a lot of these films, such as Midnight Cowboy, are undeniable classics, they require far too much engagement and thought to rival Hard Target. Van Damme actually punches a snake and then bites off its rattle!!

That Singham video is a work of genius.

I'd rate Bloodsport*, Kickboxer**, Universal Soldier and AWOL as better Van Damme films personally.

*Also featuring a young Forest Whitaker.
**Looks like a remake is on the cards only this time Van Damme will be the wise old trainer.

I love all the 90s Jon Woo Van Damme films, really cheesy yet really good!

This thread has cheered my heart.

Hard target is UNDENIABLY the finest of JCVDs many and glorious works, and a stand-out amongst the low budget action movie genre.

To the OP - I recommend you peruse the collected works of Dolph Lundgren. Yes, he's done some big name stuff (rocky, expendables, universal soldier etc) but you really want to delve deep into the back catalogue for some classics of the bad-cheap-action-movie genre. Basically anything with "red" in the title and him as generic-russian, or a particular classic, Blackjack:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0126816/?ref_=nm_flmg_act_44

Directed by John Woo, and Lundgren plays someone afraid of the colour white. I know what you're thinking the final scene with the bad guy will be like. You're right.

Apparently bloodsport and kickboxer are getting remade.

Is this the best scene in a film ever?

I'm a bug fan of 'golden era' Seagal. How can you not enjoy Marked For Death, where he takes on the Jamaican Voodoo Possee, or On Deadly Ground where he goes on a spirit journey and stabs a bear?

As much as I want to enjoy Seagal films as he seems a pretty cool dude, they're generally just a bit crap - really struggled to get through On Deadly Ground the other day. The pseudo-spiritual guff he insists on shoehorning into a lot of his flicks is just bizarre. On the other hand, he did do Under Siege which is one of my fave action films ever and I live in hope of him being in a future Expendables sequel!

It wasn't until I got Sky with all it's B-movie channels that I realised just how many Van Damme films there are where he plays twins/clones/etc. There's something about him though that makes even his bad films pretty watchable.

I think Under Siege was the only decent Seagal film, his attempt at the Van Damme franchise didn't really work....

I think it's because you know where you stand. There's going to be some dodgy acting, and someone's getting scissor-kicked in the head. So long as this happens, it's all good!

No retreat, no surrender is a classic. Van Damme as a villain and the protagonist being trained by Bruce Lee's ghost!
