So, the detail of the question. I have mains charger for the tomtom that is a mains plug with a usb port output. Stick the usb lead in one end and the other end with the micro usb plug in to the tomtom and it charges. Same cable plugs straight into the usb port on the pc and it charges the tom tom. So can I plug my ipod in to the tomtom mains plug to charge it....along with any other usb powered device or is there discreet voltage device controling the input?

probably, yes. USB allows for different current consumptions but the voltage is always the same.
