For writing software, there's a sweet spot between clever enough to avoid race hazards and stupid enough to know when to stop being clever.

But I'm a manager now so it doesn't matter anyway.

My IQ is high enough to flag that I'm reasonably good at taking IQ tests. As an all encompassing measure of intelligence I'm not sure that IQ is always a reliable yardstick though.

My uncle Billy however had much to brag about...

Can't remember but I was invited to join MENSA, but was too stupid to pay the fees so I could tell everyone how clever I was.

Mine “was” about 150, when it was measured. Although as people say I think it mostly means I was good at the tests, I’m dyslexic and although the bit of my brain that does spelling reading etc is a bit muddled, the bit that does the maths, visual learning etc is fortunately very much the other way and I found the tests pretty easy, at the time. But this was over 30 years ago and a lot of water has passed under that bridge.

Some days I now recon it feels closer to 50, just below the dog. 🤣🤣🤣

But it’s okay as now I’m “worldly wise”. 🤪

In 2004, a New York Times reporter asked Stephen Hawking what his IQ was. “I have no idea,” the theoretical physicist replied. “People who boast about their IQ are losers.”

I'm pretty stupid, but aiming to stay the right side of the Dunning-Kruger curve.
That said, I'm not as stupid as other people think I am, possibly not even as stupid as I think I am, but I'd rather err on the side of stupid.

Yep and the more you do the tests the better you get. Combine that with using the right approach to the test - if you can't get the answer very quickly move on to next question to ensure all of the questions have been attempted and then go back to the harder ones.

I managed to get mine above 160.

Sad.

Im fee4ling this is an attack because of my thread where I stupidly mentioned my iq. Ok maybe aye, maybe no, but given that thread aIl took a lot of criticism.
If thaats the case then who does that now reflect upon.
I didnt ask to be born with autism, and having an IQ such doesnt mean im on par with any sort of genius. just its high, and maybe that in itself is the reason they class me as vulnerable.
I look at past experience as a method of relating to current situations, a way of drawing on past learned experiences and use those to direct or hoefuly influence my decision making.

And as a result im at my lowest ebb.

Heath is dire currently, i've tests on Tuesday to confirm if its lung cancer or not. As such Im far too open, too melancholic looking back is something im settling on, because the future is looking bleak. Breathing's been difficult these last few months. Ive become an expert at lying to myself. I knew this wasn't something to forget about.
Too many cigarettes, probably compounded with this lockdown, Ill i have to hold onto is the past, so sit and chain smoke. I know that was the worse thing i could be doing, but there is little else in a day to day setting.
.
Overall, and something which is hard for anyone who cycles, or has done for nearly 20 years is the risk of losing my right leg below the knee. That frightens me so much I dont think I could continue on. The vascular surgeon has given me a 5 year timespan, and we're 2 years in.
Currently that art of the leg is ice cold, and im even using these heat pads to force some heat into it and hopefully prevent the blood from pooling and other complications setting it.
Its one problem compounding another. I can hardly walk 5 steps without pain, but I force myself on. A bicycle is easier, I can go a distance I cant walking anymore and the loss of ability to ride leaves me feeling it would be pointless.
.
Im buying an ebike because cycling now is difficult, but I stoically force myself on and forcing myself to continue at all costs seems to be an intricate part of my person. Now more than ever.
Im hoping this will allow me to keep going, even if it is at 5mh with kids and little old ladies whizzing past.
.
If the op thinks ridiculing me, and launching a personal attack then so be it, maybe that reflects on you rather than myself. If thats what you want then thats ok, i was upset but im resigned now and no longer care.
My past is my past, its bad, and worse than most will ever be aware, and I know others have had similar or worse lives, i wouldnt cheapen those experiences.
I feel i am still here because I have a large iq, as something drove me on through homelessness, the abuse the loss of friends and loved one and kept me going while most of my friends jagged or drank themselves to death. Something I feel helped me cope, maybe even a detachment of reality.

If its just your timing OP, then I apologize.

I shall trouble thee no more.

@dyna-ti

I'm not going to start an argument beyond thinking that yes, based on the earlier post you may be a tiny bit paranoid. But.

For the love of god. You know that thing where you walk into a shop and go "twenty fags please"? Stop doing that. There surely has to come a point where the cons outweigh the pros.

I lost my dad this way. I don't say this to be melodramatic or emotional, there was no love lost between us. But rather for your googling pleasure, "necrosis" and "vascular dementia" are fun things to watch a parent go through. I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy.

If you're genuinely so hopelessly addicted that you'd rather just give up and rot to death than stop smoking, please please set up Lasting Power of Attorney for your family. It will empower them to look after your health and finances when you're seeing dogs riding bicycles up the wall whilst soiling yourself. Because believe me, this is the path you're on if the Big C doesn't intervene first. Giving PoA is like £170 and ten minutes filling in forms on the gov.uk website, taking PoA after someone has lost their marbles takes months and costs thousands.

Your past may be your past, but your future is still in your control. Seize it.

I thank you for your supportive words Cougar, I have done all the projections and scenarios, and I know its something I needed to end. One of the difficulties I faced there was i smoked weed with it, and felt that was one of the main needs for the tobacco. Its been about 3 weeks since I managed to stop that, which was my insulation, in that all the friends either drank or took heroin, and it was always me stated, Stick to weed boys, you'll never go wrong. Hindsight of those words. And everyone's gone now, fallen by the wayside, and im all thats left. Just pictures in my mind.
I was looking today at old newspaper cuttings of a Dales sale back in August 1999 in the Record, showing me and Jim, who I last heard was found overdosed over in Easterhouse, and Kenny from Windwave. We'd waited there 2 days to get their £150 sales voucher for being first through thew door.

I fully understand the horrific risk, and I've even a visual, with my neighbour opposite took a stroke a few years ago, smoking related, so I've watched him go from chatty, to hardly being able to. It's also led to my Fathers death, and his Father
Ive spoken in the past about the human condition, and maybe a condition of plugging on with behaviours that are detrimental to us, yet we continue.
The past is the past, but I have problems letting that go. It has been in the press lately, and it can never be resolved for me at least.

I fear the future as I fear not being able to stop. Sit in day after day, week after week only the past as a happier comfort zone. Was looking at the patches(Opened a thread about it to and got many very supportive comments). But ive yet to do it, possibly I maybe feel its too late, and the process has begun and cannot be arrested.
I will try, again Ive always felt an inner strength that kept me going, to put it as i'd say to myself over the years, 'To Keep Going No Matter The Cost', at what cost indeed.

For the sake of your mental health,I thank you again for your sympathy, nobody can predict or judge how people are, and less they actually tell you. Today I just felt it relevant, id overstepped, became too much of a dick, maybe wrapped too tightly.
.
I'll buy the damn things tomorrow, though I have been telling myself this for 3 weeks now, and the Chemist only at the top of the road. Ive tried everything else, hypnotherapy, though again my mind examines the process of that and works out how it works, so in the end it doesnt 😕 even the prescription option, but that reacted, and apparently doesnt work for some. Patches are the last chance saloon, but required a willpower I think ive lost.

Again I thank you and say say no more on the subject, the balls in my court, and i can either score or kick it into touch.

dyna ti - I once made the same mistake on here.

I am very good at doing IQ tests, even better at verbal reasoning quotient tests. My true IQ will be lower than both scores.

there are other form of intelligence as well. emotional inteligence is one. I vere between good and ruddy awful at that one

I also have some strong autistic traits

What does all that make me? Me thats what it makes

When I was 17, the headmaster told me I seemed to know everything already and he felt there wasn't anything the teachers could teach me, so I might as well bugger off and stop wasting their time. Excellent advice that I have taken to heart.

I've scored between 150 160 on tests so I definitely question the validity of them.

I definitely question the validity of them.

If it was a proper proctered test and not a 'test your IQ' on Facebook then you have the intelligence to do well on IQ tests. A singular measure, granted, but still.

A score needs to be associated with the test though, since they use different scoring mechanisms, so it's what percentile your score is in for that particular test that needs to be looked at.

I believe our feline friend means don't buy more fags. Definitely worth giving the patches a go (see if you can get on a "proper" support plan too, even if it's just phone support - they work better than going it alone)

Best of luck for a good test outcome

There was a very interesting chap on radio 4 a while back who creates and assesses IQ tests. His assertion is that a standard IQ test can't actually give you your IQ and certainly not a quick one you take on the internet, he said that if you take several standard tests and they all come back with roughly the same answer then there's a fair chance you're IQ is somewhere in that range, although some people's minds are more suited to IQ tests than others due to the nature of the way the questions work, spacial awareness etc.

I did some IQ tests many years ago as practice for the entry tests for the fire service as their tests were just standard IQ tests and I wanted to get my eye in as it were. The book of tests I took at the time instructed you to do two or three tests to familiarise yourself with the format but ignore those results, you should then go on to do three to five more tests and if the scores were in a similar range then it stated (as the chap above did) that you probably have an IQ roughly in this range, I don't think too many who seek to find their IQs these days have the pateince for such things.

IQ is a z-score, adjusted so the mean is 100, which tells you how many standard deviations away from the mean an individual is on any given test of some or other aspect of cognitive ability. So 1 in 2 people have an IQ of 100 or more, 1 in 17 for 125 or more, 1.1 in 1000 have an IQ of 150 or more, and 1 in 11,000 have an IQ of over 160.

So whilst I guess people posting on stw are not randomly selected, it looks kind of unlikely that everyone's as high IQ as they think they are.

I say that obv as one of the 1 in 5bn scoring over 200 (may as well lie big).

Dyna-ti.

Whatever you can do to lessen the likelihood/severity of health issues - so it and do it now.

From my own experience with strokes and TIA’s from other causes - I would not wish them on anyone. I have also watched my father die - largely as a result of his lifelong smoking habit. He was just 63.

Look after yourself and by doing that you will be also looking after those you love too.

Take care dude!
