but intrested in movies or video, want ease of use and relability.
Can you help me choose
Cheers
I bought mine as an entertainment gadget: music, games, films, email etc. It works well. Are you OK with iTunes?
er never used itunes........does that make me a luddite????
Some people don't get on with it. But an iPod without iTunes is like a car without wheels. ITunes works OK in my opinion.
You have also to consider the Apple Hegemony problem. Some of my mates have forsworn all Apple products because they believe them to be anti-competitive. But IMO, Apple stuff has the best MMIs and touchability (As a software designer, I am also a fan of Dieter Rams). Their dominance of the market is well earned.
An unexpected bonus for me was how nice it is the browse the web on one. BTW, the Apple headphones are not very good, so get some Senheisers.
2nd the headphones comments. Get (genuine!) sennheisers. iTunes is a pain but you get used to it, no way is it the best way to manage your music though. How much memory do you need? IIRC touch(es) don't have massive capacity. Lovely to use though, as a fellow luddite the user interface is fantastic IME. I did end up selling mine and getting a classic ipod with 120gb memory because although I don't need all of that mermory the touch (16gb) filled up before I got to "S" in my collection!
itunes just works IMO. As long as you're careful when you install it it's fairly non-intrusive.
I've got a 16G itouch and I had to be brutal with my music collection, it has to be said. James Last and Whitney were out the door!
The real problem with memory though is videos. If you're looking to watch films on it, it's one or two at a time.
Apart fromthat, great! Wireless only obviously but it's reasonable reception. Very easy to use. Very small. Pain when no wireless available but there you go.
I really dislike iTunes. You can use Winamp with iPods and I think it does a much better job 🙂
ipod touch G3 comes in a 64GB now.
I'm still using my G1 16GB with no probs after 2 & a half years.
I'd wait to see what gets announced this week. There will be a new iphone and there may be a new ipod touch to go with it.
If you already have a wireless Nokia and internet contract you're happy with, JoikuSpot lets you set it up as a wlan hotpsot - then you can browse via the touch. Bit fiddly, but as I won the touch in a conference draw I'm not complaining 😀

Does your phone get really hot when you do that? My E71 does!
Yes, but I just put it in a trouser pocket and enjoy it while I can 🙂
Mmm... nothing quite like the feel of an active radio transmitter right next to Uncle Peter and the boys. 🙂

My E71 gets pretty hot just accessing wifi.
Got 3 boys, frankly Uncle Peter and the boys need a decent shot of radiation - it's that or two bricks 😀
There won't be any new iPod announcements today, they are always in September, in time for Christmas. The next version of the Touch will probably top out at 128Gb.
Mediamonkey is a good itunes alternative too 🙂

I have to admit I've never used a different music management programme, but comments like this never fail to surprise me that folk hate itunes so much. I'm no apple fan-boi but it's pretty intuitive, it stores music, ummm, I'm struggling now to think what I need it to do that it doesn't do acceptably well. Certainly my 9 yr old daughter downloads and edits home-made movies she's made from her nano with no help or input from me, and both my children manage their music perfectly well.
As for touch, yeah it's fun, OK web-browser, most of the apps work, stores music.. it's not really life changing, but it's fine.
okay thanks basically ipod touch seems okay and i get to use it as an mp3 that can do other things..........itunes is okay as well........got a bit lost in the middle of the tread sorry i really do not get all the this one does this.i just need to plug it in and transfer my music, good comment on capacity though
Thanks
What about the Zen X-Fi2 ?
If you liked the old zen so much. I am thinking about one and for £149 for the 8gb Touch you can get 32Gb Zen. Heard the interface is a bit clumsy compared to the touch but i can forgoe that for the fact it will take more songs & videos on board.
Only thing that worries me is i buy something that isnt really supported for software.
Oh and do people really use these things for internet?
Oh and do people really use these things for
internet?
No.
(Posted from my iPhone) 😉
Yeah I use my touch for surfing this site. It's very comfortable to use.
Fair enough. I hadnt imagined using one of these for internet use. More a mobile music and video system. I use a laptop for internet use.
Yep, got a netbook, but I still end up doing most of my surfing here on my phone. It's just easier and quicker. It becomes a casual distraction, something to do while the the adverts are on, rather than being a complete task in itself.
e.g. "find and unpack netbook, start it up, wait while it boots up, wait while the virus scanner updates, start Firefox, get Windows Updates..." becomes just "Press button, read threads, done"
great wee devices. I use mine as a remote control for itunes, quick checking of email without turning on PC; kids use it for games and puzzles. A very versatile gadget! basically an iphone without the phone bit!
Indeed. You can even jailbreak them & use GPS satnav. 😀
Great things - not sure if worth the expense if you are not using the big screen (surfing, videos etc.)
