My wife bought me an iPod dock,an Onkyo[?] for my old Classic from Richer sounds but it just won't work. Her iPhone 4s works, my son's later iPod works, but mine doesn't. Richer sounds were fine about it but were very puzzled because they had recommended it knowing what iPod model it was. They tried a different classic and that worked fine. They didn't have any other models in so gave me my money back but I still want a dock and wonder if anyone on here has any idea what the problem could be in case it affects other types of dock?

Check the firmware version. Some older classics won't update any further and not recognised by the dock. My Onkyo and Pure Dab don't recognise mine.

Might be worth checking the dock port in the base, it's possible it's become clogged with fluff. You can either try blowing it clean with an air duster, or carefully run a fine needle along both sides of the connector to lift any detritus out. I still use my old iPhone 4 as an iPod, and occasionally it won't connect with the dock on my DAB radio, and it's almost always because it's full of compacted fluff.
