Following on from a thread a month or so ago. I was looking for a compact amp to hook an iPod Classic up to. It was in turn, going to drive some Mission 771s. Before I can flamed by the resident audiophiles, the idea is for a compact system to use in a busy room. The purity and depth of the sound quality is not the primary requirement.... that is catered for elsewhere in the house.

Anyway, I ended up with a Denon DM37. Mrs slowjo has expressed a desire for a docking system (she doesn't know she has, but it is the only thing that will do what she wants). Richer Sounds do a cheapie, another for about £100 and then again Denon do one for maybe £180.

I suppose the question is, what more do you get for the extra money? If it was STX RC (remember that?), LX or XT I'd know the difference but I'm all at sea on this one. Oh yes... and which is "best" given that sound quality is not of overriding importance (hence the iPod) but I don't want a heap of rubbish. Buy cheap, buy twice or, maybe the middle of the road option is best?

I'd guess build and sound quality - probably much more so than stx-rc vs lx or xt.

To plug into an amp, or a standalone speaker dock?

If the former, just pick up an Apple universal dock. About £35 these days, but they come with a remote now. Plugs in with a normal phono to 3.5mm plug.

For the latter, something like the Pure Chronos is nice, pretty compact but well made for the money and does DAB radio too. Depends a lot on how much you want to spend and how big a unit you want really.

I'm going to plug into an amp so the Apple looks like it will work then. 🙂

I'd guess that a non-apple dock will be way cheaper.

Get one of these - http://www.amazon.co.uk/PURE-i-10-Powered-Remote-Control/dp/B001HBIXSW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1266234222&sr=8-1

Cheaper than the Apple dock, and offers just the same functions.
