Well, do you really mean free, or subsidised with your contract but no upfront cost? I expect you mean the second...

Similarly for the 4... what's a packet? Full price (£600 for a 32gb)?

you being charged by the word for posting on here?

I've got a 4 and my wife has a 3 and my kids older style iTouches.

For the new screen alone I'd go for the 4.

Camera on 4 way better but probably not worth whatever the diff is. I'd wait for the next one that's released.

Just a thought - personally I don't need to carry loads of music and pictures all the time so the smallest makes more sense/sensible price.

Ok, IA, it's a couple of hundred pounds for the 4 @ £35 a month contract.
Free on all tariffs for the 3.

I've never paid for a handset incidentally.

I'd shop around - I paid less than a hundred for my 4 with Orange on a similar contract.

Get the 4. Superior in every aspect to the 3.
Better screen, camera, GPS and battery life being the most important.

Also the 3 is starting to suck as they release new versions of IOS.

They seem to design the IOS for the 4 and don't bother with a trimmed down version for the 3. Everytime I do a software update my phone seems to get a bit clunkier.

i've just got a free HTC Desire on upgrade from Orange, but it would have been £120 for the iPhone 4 (£35/month + insurance) - i'd shop around a bit, you'll be able to do better...

Haven't owned a 3, only played with one. But have had a 4 since Aug - awesome piece of kit and by far the best phone I've owned/used/seen. Faster, slicker, smoother, and generally lag-free regardless of what it's doing.

Depends on your circumstances as to whether you can justify the added expense vs how much you're going to make use of it. 4 all the way for me though.

I have a 3G and had a 4 for work for a few months. 4 is noticeably faster. Camera is much better, and the screen is great. I'm struggling on with the 3G for now, but I wouldn't want to get a 3 now and plan on keeping it for 2 years.

Had a 3G. Now have a 4. Really don't think the 4 is really that much better to warrant a significant outlay.

go for the 4. the battery on mine lasts so much longer than the one on my 3gs ever did. I use it loads and I'm only charging once every 2-3 days. the 3gs at times would be down to 20% by 5pm.
the display, speed, cameras, flash and scratch resistance added up make it worth the extra.

Battery life is a good point.

I've got a 3Gs and have had a play on a friends 4, the screen is much better, as is the camera, and yes the 3 does seem to be getting more clunky with every update, however I'm not changing for a 4, will wait till the 5 comes out. But if I were getting one now, I wouldn't even look at the 3, especially if on a 2 year contract as it'll be so outdated by the time you come to upgrade, the 3Gs was released over 18 months ago, and was only a mild revision of the 3G, and I expect that apple will stop offering any kind of updates before too long.

The difference in the screen between 3G and 4 is quite a leap:

I think it is more likely to be a "4s" or something, along the lines of the 3G -> 3Gs.

Has anyone actually got pockets big enough for an iphone? In both senses of the word?

Or do you all just wear extemely baggy Dolce & Gabbana jeans?

Unless you are wearing your sisters jeans, you should be just fine.

So you don't get your iphone out and put it on the table/desk every time you sit down? I thought that was the point?

😉

It's really not very big and it is a nice flat shape that sits well in a jacket pocket without an unsightly bulge.

I suppose if you compare it to some tiny modern clamshell phone then it will seem big, but I can remember proper big mobiles:

And you can't even play Angry Birds on that.
