I have never been able to get the latest update for iphone. for some reaon frezzes when updating from laptop. how can i save all info and still get this thing updated? was thinking download itunes to another comp to do update then revert back to old one with all songs etc?

yes and it trys to update with latest software and just stalls half way through.

You could try doing a full reset, ie wiping the phone of all it's data and settings, and installing the OS to how it left the factory. There is a setting in iTunes somewhere... Then applying the update. Make sure your stuff is backed up first though!
Delete the update from your PC, then allow iTunes to download it again. I can't remember where the updates are saved, but Google can help.
