Yeah why not. Mines running 5 without a problem.

I'm on a 3GS too and I haven't... their on to 5.0.1 now and 5.1 is in beta.

iOS 4 really knackered my wife's old 3G; I don't fancy that happening to mine, so I'm going to wait until people have stopped naysaying - if that never happens, I probably won't bother upgrading - not really lacking for usability on iOS 4.

iOS5 is a bit sluggish on my 3GS, particularly when opening the Messages app for some reason, but otherwise it seems to work ok. It's fixed some bluetooth/WiFi problems so was certainly worth the upgrade for me.

Mate of mine hates IOS5 as he says it slows it down far too much..

5.0 was treacly slow on my 3GS - multi-second pauses switching between apps, rendering web pages etc etc, and app crashes.
5.01 is MUCH faster all round, and no app crashes since the update, but it's still not as snappy as iOS 4 was, and rendering web pages is still a little annoying. However, the new iOS5 goodness means I won't be downgrading.
Mrs F is very happy with iOS 5 on her new free from a friend 3GS.

iOS 5 was the smoothest update I've done on mine, as in the first time I didn't have to restore from backup at any point...
