it's the company that we get all of our works pc from but the do excellent i5/i7 laptops at a good price. should be more than enough just for home usage
You're right in thinking an iPad won't fill your gaming needs.
And to be honest, laptops will never be great for gaming but Minecraft should be fine. Runs on my sons £300 Tesco laptop ok.
Tons of games available on the iPad (including a mini "Minecraft Pocket Edition") - but yeah if they want specific games then you will probably have to stick to a PC.
Worth looking at the PC World refurbs on eBay. Mainly reconditioned returns. I just picked a reasonable spec laptop from them for £270. Seller is currys_pcworld.
AMD llano processors on entry level laptops have a built in GPU for better gaming. The processors are called something like 'AMD A4-3300M', that one is about i3 equivalent.
Here's a Thinkpad with one at a pretty good price: http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/4-/30975078/Lenovo-ThinkPad-Edge-12003GG-39-6-cm-LED-Laptop-AMD-A4-3300M-1-90-GHz-Black-1366-x-768-WXGA-Display-4-GB-RAM-500-GB-HDD/Product.html?_%24ja=tsid:11518|cat:30975078|prd:30975078
Get a laptop and a games console?
13" laptops are the best compromise for usability and portability IMHO.
