Morning STW,
Is anyone using a 10.5" iPad alternative? If so.. is it any good? I quite fancy a slightly bigger screen for the turbo set up in the garage, but am 'over' apple and quite like being able to download movies etc to the tablet which is considerably easier on not-apple.
What have you got, and would you recommend it?
Cheers all!

Not an Apple Fanboi but I think the Tablet is something they do better than anybody else. Tried a few alternatives (not sure there are many) hoping they could be good but IME the iPad is the best out there. Happy to be proved wrong.

but am 'over' apple

They must be devastated.

Seriously, if you want an iPad Pro, just get an iPad Pro.

I have a MS Surface Pro for work - too unreliable IME, falls-over regularly, it's been 'rebuilt' 3 times and that the was after a prior OS upgrade resulted in terminal hardware failure.

Got a new 12.9” iPad Pro with my new job and it is amazing. Genuine laptop replacement for me.

Can’t think of anything else that fits the bill.

Oh, and it is very easy to download films to play when out of internet access.

This.. no one does tablets as well as apple. I've been using one instead of work laptop for a few months. Only things I can't do need secure VPN access which can't currently do on iOS according to my work IT geeks.

I used https://www.bulletvpn.com/ for awhile for VPN, worked for what I needed.

Fairly sure you can use a VPN.

Either via an app or manually setting one up using L2TP/IPSec. Unless your work is using a PPTP server I guess.

Get a 2nd hand Galaxy Note Pro tablet - 12.2" screen, built in pen.

Basically it is what apple [s]innovated[/s] copied for the Ipad Pro.

Unless your work is using a PPTP server I guess.
and if they are they need good kick and telling to get with the programme. PPTP is a busted flush for secure connection.
Edit: It's the wireless WEP equivalnet for VPN

I’m pretty sure mine does more than that.

Given they have advised iOS cannot use VPNs, one has to wonder.

I looked at all the alternatives to the iPad pro and none of them cane close to what I wanted.

I hate Apple with a vengeance but still bought one and I must admit it's really very good.

A standard iPad for less money?

The ‘point’ of the Pro is to be tablet replacement for a Mac in the same way the Surface Pro is for a laptop. If you’re just going to watch films on it on your turbo you might as well buy the standard one it’s extra RAM and CPU isn’t needed, I guess a lot of people just think ‘more is more’ and buy them, I suppose they’re a bit quicker than something that’s already more than quick.

Hi P-jay, its more the bigger screen than any internal stuff. Not really viable to get a TV in there unfortunately...!

No doubt the iPad Pro is a super bit of kit and amazingly capable, but do you actually have any other use in mind other than watching films in your garage while on the turbo? If not then why not just get a Fire 10 for 150 quid and save yourself at least 600 quid.

This!

I'm not at all fussed by apple phones - much prefer android..

But..having had a couple of android tablets, the iPad is just better...

If you want one of the most capable tablets out there. Or you want something that can be a genuine desktop replacement. Or if you just want an iPad Pro. Then go get an iPad Pro. Seems madness to spend close to a grand on something just to watch movies on in your garage while on the turbo though 🙂

Sony Xperia Z4 Tablet - if you can find one, 2560 display, waterproof, updates to 7.1.1. Had mine 2 years and use every day.
