My 14 week old son has been left a modest inheritance by his late great-grandmother.
Where is the best place for it? I was thinking Premium bonds?
Bank shares.... seriously.
RBS - currently 28p. It will not fail. Potential that this could be worth a few quid in 10-15 years.
Premium bonds are safe, so invest most in their, but why not try 10-15% of the inheritance in something that could give a 10 fold increase.
(Remember stacks can go down as well as up, and there are other Banks!)
Depends on your outlook/risk profile? And the amount to a degree.
If it won't be accessed until he is at least 18/21 then stocks and shares would probably be the best bet in the long term.
If you are risk averse then bank/building society although currently it'll reduce in value in real terms due to inflation.
If you think you're lucky then Premium bonds but as they generally seem to yield less than bank interest rates today (assuming you shop around for 2.5%+) it's not something i'd 'invest' in.
Personally i also shy away from any investment that puts the money outside of your future control (junior ISA etc) as once it matures you can't stop your child accessing it. Great if he grows up decent and responsible, not so great if at 18 he's in with the wrong crowd and likely to spunk it up the wall with his new heroin addict girlfriend...... ๐
buy land, land is always a good investment, as long as you buy good farm land you can rent it out
what do you call modest, under or over a million
if you have a windy site (say 7.5m/s) a small wind turbine works out to give a RoI of around +12.5%
What about a solar PV install? You get the benfit now, he benefits later if you put the FIT back in to an account for him. Or something.
