We had quite a few moths last summer and a few woollens got damaged but in the last few days we’ve found a threadbear patch on one of the carpets has suddenly appeared. Subsequently my wife has found lots of larvae in nooks and crannies in rooms throughout the house. We’re going to get a pest control person in but both of us a stressing about dealing with it. My concern is getting into everything for fumigation, we’ve got a room full of untold junk we will need to clear out to get to all the carpet. And also how likely is it to work? Do we need to nuke from orbit (eg bin all non-synthetics and rip up all our wool carpets?)

Go-on STW allay my fears with tales of domestic moth irradication!

When our dog had caught fleas we also had some trouble with morhs, these killed both.

Had a nightmare with these. Spent a fair whack on the fumigators and other treatments. Thought we got on top of it, following the instructions to the letter, but they came back. Binned the carpet and rugs in the end and then fumigated and treated.

As you say clearing the rooms to treat them was the biggest nightmare.

Good luck

Yep, same last year, Will never get wool carpets again.

Every room stripped and all materials treated to kill the larvae. Now there are papers and tablets under every bit of furniture, replaced regularly.

We keep sticky traps everywhere to give an early warning of any adults. I think they come in on the logs. I now scatter moth killing tabs in the logs and kindling baskets.

I feel your pain, strip the house and blitz it.

Thanks for the replies everyone, good to know it’s not just us! Another fun grown-up problem to keep on top of! Early detection sounds like a good idea pictonroad, I’d not thought about logs either!

Haha Mary Hinge id not clocked that.

Sticky traps seem to work, but the pheromone is only specific for one species
Insecticide might take more than one visit, and some persist in your carpet for longer-term treatment of the problem. I didn't fancy sharing my evenings with insecticide, regardless of its safety
It'll be man-made fibre when we next have a carpet

Timely thread.

tell tale small moth in our bedroom this morning and that was the room treated last. FFS.

I just don’t think wool carpets are compatible with living in the far south, it’s not cold enough to break the lifecycle outside and the chemical consequences inside aren’t pleasant.

We will be stripping every room and re-treating again. It takes ages, it’s bad for you and utterly tedious.

I thought I was being grown up and smart saving up to buy lovely British made wool carpets. Damn things will need to be skipped at this rate. 😔😔

Luckily I only get them in my downstairs loo... Saw a thing on telly, said just vacuum! So that's what I've been doing, hopefully less of the little blighters this year.
