I am going skiing to Saalbach next weekend. Not a package holiday so need to sort the ski hire ourselves. I have seen you can do it on the internet https://www.skiset.co.uk/ski-resort/hinterglemm is this worth doing or should we just wait until we get there and spot a shop. Thinking it could be time/hassle efficient.

Also any recommendations for a reasonably priced but still reasonable set of new Goggles?

Snowbrainer is what I’ve always used. Just make sure you select a shop near your accommodation.

Goggles - no idea - I see shedloads of ads for “cheaper than Oakleys or Smiths” on my Fb feed - i imagine any kind of decent quality that comes with a low-light and a sunny lens will be ok. The choice is bewildering

saalbach is quite a big town so definitely make sure you know where the shop is in relation to your accommodation (and note that Hinterglemm is a busride up the valley - didn't follow your link but the address includes Hinterglemm).
It will have loads of hire shops so I doubt you'll NEED to do so in advance (and I've never seen much real evidence of better prices if you do) but you definitely could, as lots of people do
Goggles - Maybe somewhere like Decathlon or a Tresspass outlet, if you're near one. Online is a bit of a punt if you must have them within a week (unless you already know the shop is quick)
[If the weather's clear you may well not need gogs anyway - I only have low-light ones and wear sunglasses if it's bright]

Enjoy Saalbach, we were there for half term.

Goggles - I had some vonzippers for a few years, were approx £45. Did all I could ask.

Bought some new anons this year for the integrated face mask mostly, can't say they did anything the vonzippers didn't.

price tends to be slightly better if done online in advance but not the 40% that they suggest.  I've used skiset before and they are fine.  Don't bother spot shopping unless you like wasting your time - they all seem to be fairly similar.   For France I've found Intersport and Sport 2000 ok, All4Ski and Snow seem to have a more mixed range of gear but they appear to look after it.  Take your pick

I use the hoff for ski rental - https://www.alpinresorts.com/en/ski-rental

Use SNOWBALL on the discount box.

Re goggles, SportPursuit had Smith vices for sale at a reasonable price.

I have some Bolle photochromic goggles. I have had Oakley and Smith before. I'd buy the Bolle Photochromics again in a second.

we bought from these guys - buy a couple and then send the ones back (they encourage it) you don't like for free... RxSport

Very good service and nice and quick.

I have used SkiSet in France. As others said the discounts aren’t as big as the web implies - but it does save a little time, and if they were very busy would mean you had gear prebooked. SkiSet used a very nice digital boot measuring system that gave excellent fitting hire boots first time - don’t know if all their shops have this.

Never had an issue turning up on resort and sorting myself out. Not sure there are huge savings to be made. Use a shop as close as possible to the main gondola out of the town as most shops allow you to keep your skis and boots there overnight so minimises walking through the town wit boots and skis. there is one in Saalbach I used before, but can't remember the name of it. Might be on GoogleMaps.

Tell us where you’re staying and some of us might be able to give you a more specific recommendation.

Also tell us what sort of skiing you enjoy - the selection tends to vary in each shop imo.

We are staying at the Hotel Birkenhof in Hinterglemm I'll be looking to hire a snowboard (but have my own Burton Moto boots). My girlfriend will be looking for skis and boots.

Neither of us are brilliant or go that often (last trip two years ago) but we are probably good enough to know rubbish stuff. We'll be sticking to the pistes so I suppose that is the ski/snowboard equivalent of trail centres only 🙂

Thanks for all the recommendations so far - much appreciated.

Ski'd in Austria a few times this season & found it cheaper to book online than directly in the hire shops. Saved around 20 euros for two of us. Skiset on Alpineresort both good.
