be VERY VERY careful with claimed five year warrantys on boilers at the moment. we do warranty work for a major insurer and manufacturer and our brief is to ensure thathe installation complies fully with the manufacturers instructions before attempting any repair. we have to see the completed benchmark documentation the building regs cert. a paper copy of each completed service and check the water quality in the CH system before making a decsion on whether to work on the boiler or not.

before deciding to replace understand properly whats wrong with the original dont just take one persons opinion get three qualified REPAIRERS to give you an opinion then make a decsion. remember the installer may make a grand out of replacing your boiler a repair may make him only 100 quid..

as for intergas.. easiest decsion all day.. walk away..
worcester bosch, proper 5 yr warranty at the mo. typical combi replacement. 1400 quid system to combi swap circa 2k

What model Potterton is it ? My old Profile 40e is over 20 years old and keeps on going. The fan is noisy but I'm just about to replace that with a new one (~£50 off Ebay). I get the boiler serviced each year, spare parts are available and it's a simple bit of kit. I did enquire about getting a new boiler fitted and the servicing guy said they only deal with Worcester Bosch who he reckoned were several steps up the quality / service ladder than the competition. I'm going to keep the Potterton until it's on its last legs however.

dont replace the fan yourself unless your gas registered.. but your right any older boiler that you can keep running is cheaper than the cost of a replacement.

My nice boiler servicing chap suggested that if I were in any ways mechanically minded then replacing the fan is a breeze (ha ha). And having taken the cover off the boiler, removed the current fan to examine it and then replaced it again I can confirm he's correct.

Yes I know black helicopters from the gas regulations peeps are probably hovering above but it's really a piece of p*ss. I'd not be tampering with anything *directly* gas related however.
