so second to the trans siberian thread, me and a mate (jcrompton) are looking for an adventure this summer, 3-4 weeks, august.
if the trans siberian doesn;t work out, what other cool places could we go?
i'd be really keen to go somewhere with good mtbing, but self-led, not guided (got a month of guided in the alps this summer already). anyone done japan? or S Africa? S America???

I once read an article (not sure where, might have even been an in-flight magazine!?) about mountain biking in Kazakhstan. It looked absolutely amazing, I don't know where you would start looking for information though.
Also around that way, I was once in Azerbaijan in and near the Caucasus mountains and remember thinking that would be great for biking. Not sure how well you would get along without Russian though...
spent 9 weeks in tajikistan last summer... it would take some bloody good mtbing to get me back out that way, to say the least!!
