Got a few hours to kill around Ross on Wye at the weekend, cant take the bike, but could travel by car upto 30 mins away. Can anyone recommend anywhere worth exploring on foot? I fancy getting some photography time in if theres anything interesting in the area.

Cheers.

There's a small coppice nearby you may be interested in called The Royal Forest of Dean!

Forest of Dean is pretty good for all sorts but there's Dancing Green nearer than Ross and Symonds Yat is also within 30 minutes too.

Tintern Abbey as above.
Symonds Yat (East) is nice for walks and the excellent Saracens Head Inn.
Falconry Centre with displays and that at Newent.
Puzzlewood (if you have kids with you).
Goodrich Castle - easy to link with Symonds Yat.

err, prolly lots more but those are off the top of my head.

Symonds yat is awesome. You could also get some superb pics from the seven sisters, one you can't/shouldn't go on unless you have a death wish but that one is the best. King arthurs cave too. Anything walking along the river is v. Pretty. Great doward on the way to symonds yat and the biblins is worth a walk, some good trails around there for biking too. Um, there is loads, a google should help. Not sure if the ferry thing still runs from the Saracens head (again google) but that's always nice as it takes you down the most scenic bit. Can't think of anything else off the top of my head. All the above mentioned are pretty good.

Take a drive into Gloucester and have a stroll around. Nice shopping, architecture, people etc.

Tintern is nice. Cross the foot bridge and climb up to offas dyke and devils pulpit for panoramic views back to Tintern. There's a disused railway line with a couple of tunnels that are quite photogenic. Lots of nesting birds including peregrines at Symonds Yat, too.

You can hire a kayak in monmouth and they drive you up to Symonds Yat, you then canoe back down the river to monmouth. Was such fun and really interesting to be at that sort of level on the river, all the wildlife etc.

I was sat outside the Saracen's Head with a pint of Butty Bach yesterday evening (just happens to be on my commute home 8) ). As has been said above, Symonds Yat East and Yat Rock (above Symonds Yat East) is as good a place as any and only 10 minutes from Ross.

The ferry at the Saracens Head is still running emma82 and can be used to make a nice circular walk taking in the Biblins footbridge. Another bonus at the moment is that Peregrine chicks have just hatched and can be seen in the nest from Yat Rock viewpoint. Oh, and the fruitcake at the Yat Rock cabin is excellent 😉

I used to live in Ross on Wye. My parents still do.

I would recommend a cannoe and pub crawl. Always a good laugh. Moor up at the next pub you find. Repeat.

Brooms farm for their cider and long necked sheep

There is a freemine tour in the Forrest of Dean. The old chap who does the tour is a great character.

And what everyone else said about canoes and Symonds yay etc.
