We have a room in a smallish outbuilding we are converting to a cinema/teenager room. The room itself is thick (30cm) slate and is surrounded on two sides by my workshop. My question is, can I insulate on workshop side of the common walls and save space in the cinema whilst still keeping the cinema warm. Or would it be best to insulate on the cinema side and sacrifice space there.

I’m a bit confused but I’d say you’d want to insulate your external walls first.
yes, but the thermal mass of the cinema room will be bigger
ie it will take longer to heat up and cool down
Assuming the other two walls are external, you’ll have thermal bridging where the cinema, workshop and outside meet, this’ll make the walls have distinct cold spots which’ll lead to condensation. I’d be insulating the insides. While you’re at it, perhaps add some acoustic panelling?
I thought that might be the case (hadn't thought of Properbikeco's entirely valid point). Oh well, thought it might be worth a go.

Good point. Maybe throw in some black nail varnish as well.
Don't forget sufficient ventilation and air supply for when they fire up the woodburner.
