i know, what a name! Shower pump draws in air so looking to fit an essex flange while locked down. Is this a job I can do myself or best left for a plumber once lock down is lifted???

Have you also considered a Surrey flange? This can help as well and no cutting cylinder.
To answer your question directly I have fitted a couple of Essex flanges and didn't find it complicated. I did have to trim about 1mm (probably less) off of two opposing sides to fit it through the immersion boss as it was too tight.
Bought mine from bes online.
Not a plumber btw.
