We will be in touch
I recently gave my mum my old Belkin router for her to use at her care home with her new Ipad. Care home said interet was working fine but router says not. I just plugged it in and it connected to the Ipad OK.
Looking at the manual ( http://cache-www.belkin.com/support/dl/p74725uk-c_f5d7632uk_man.pdf), it seems the only thing that might be different might be the conection type: "PPPoE, PPPoA, or other types". My line was regular phone, hers is dedicated ASDL, should I be changing this on the router...or anything else?
What is it you're trying to do?
Does she have her own phoneline or is it shared?
Errrm, Username and password for the ADSL service you're connecting to?
The care home said the internet was up and running. She just wants to use her Ipad. It's an individual line in her room, which we paid to get live.
Has care home supplied Internet to your mums home, if so you'll need the settings, username and password from them.

Ok her own line means you'll need the ISP login details, they will also give you the router settings to use. Don't forget to use a filter.
Well it's an ASDL dedicated line, not a phone line, so no filter needed?
Will there nec be a password etc?

I'm not sure about that.
Will there nec be a password etc?
The ISP will have the details, can we ask who you've chosen?

Yes. Even if you were just connecting to 'their' router you'd need SSID and password.
reading this, it's still a bit muddled as to what you having supplied to my mind.
A) Is the supplied ADSL line direct to a provider that you've have taken a contract with? (I suspect not, otherwise you'd be given a pre-programmed router)
Or (B) is the ADSL line to your mums room, a connection from the carehomes own ADSL system?
(C) Are you sure it's an ADSL not ADSL2 line? (wrong type of router?)
Personnally I'm thinking B, and if this is the case, you need to program the ADSL router with a IP address not on the carehomes routers IP range, and plug the incoming physical connection into any of the ports other than the ADSL "in" line & in this case no you do not need their ADSL/Wifi login details. Simpler than it sounds.. find a guide specifying how to use an old router to extend wifi (the Wifi setup section doesn't apply, just setup your 'own' or use the default)
The router will need to be set up for the ISP.
If its a BT line you'll need to set it as follows
PPPoA
VC-MUX
VPI / VCI - 0 / 38
You'll also need to configure the router with the ISP username and password.
Yes you need to use a filter regardless.
OK thanks all, looks like a bit of work is needed yet, and the care home have not given us the info required.
🙂 buuuuut, did you ask for it? I read 'Care Home' as 'Probably not IT support and therefore not au fait with the set up of a s/h router from the back of the cupboard..... '.
🙂
Well it's an ASDL dedicated line, not a phone line, so no filter needed?
Are you sure it's not an RJ45 Ethernet port?
In my experience with IT in care homes, they usually provide internet by having a single connection and sharing this between a number of users on a network... In which case ratherbeint.... above, may have a point... This would make sense, as otherwise if no router was plugged in, how would the care home be able to say that 'the internet is fine'?
If this is the case you will need to configure your router as just a wireless access point, patch it into the care home's network and give it a route to the care home's main internet router. (they will need to give you this info... or you can set your router up to get an address and routing information from the network automatically using dhcp).
If it is genuinely a dedicated ADSL connection, then bigyinn above is correct... you won't get a connection without putting in your adsl username and password etc.
Clear as mud?
