The lip is insane. Not a chance you'd catch me anywhere near that.

I like the comment that "The French Navy labeled this day a double code red prohibiting and threatening to arrest anyone that entered the water"

I wish they would put in one wave in at normal speed with sound in at the end, showing how fast and loud it really is.

Looks good but as said above, needs to be shown at full speed and with good sound. Nothing like a thundering wave hammering at you to make you feel small

The hand at 7:02...

Astonishing stuff.

I'll throw 'that' sequence into the thread for anyone loading up on epic surf action.

Crikey. Can't quite get my head around the perspective, esp when there's some blokes in a small boat just casually watching in the forground. Impressive stuff.

Teahupoo's got nothing on The Right, or Cyclops for that matter.

I don't know anything about waves but in the first video, the shape of the wave looks really different, as if there is a 'heavier' body of water, or perhaps that's a greater mass of water, being pulled up into the wave. The lip looks like it starts to collapse behind the leading edge because of the weight.

It looks incredible.

'Teahupoo' in the first vid is a bit of a one-off. See Wikipedia

Love the Shipsterns vid. That break has an extra dimension i.e. @ 2:35. Mental just like the Tasmanians.

That Shipsterns wave looks like the nastiest, dirtiest reef break I've ever seen. I'd rather stick wasps up my arse than go play with that.

Fascinating. So the term 'heavy' was right then.

Just watched the Shiptons video. Oh good lord that is scary s**t. What is it that causes the wave to break in multiple places along its front face?

I think its the shape of the reef underneath and in front of the wave that contributes towards its shape. The US navy have done loads of mapping of the topography of the seabed at Mavericks and they now now why it's as big and bad tempered as it is.

Oh my God.

Just watched the original clip (on mpora:) http://video.mpora.com/watch/5Pgs2slxu/hd

My exclamation of 'Holy ****!' got the rest of the office's attention! ๐Ÿ˜ณ

I've watched plenty of surfing clips/vids over the years, of 'Chopes' too ( as dudes like me call it ๐Ÿ˜‰ )but that has raised the bar.

Yeah Shipstern's is seriously heavy but it is never gonna win a beauty contest.

i was talking to a mate about this last night.

the question came up of would you go on a wave like that if there wasn't a chance in hell of making it. 1 in 10? maybe, but absolute certainty of a beating that has a high chance of killing you? not a mentality I can understand.

the view that last guy had must have been mental...

I am surprised that they don't wear some kind of mimi breathing system, but i guess it would get washed off and its not exactly the surfy image!

I believe they train by running along the sea bed holding rocks, to get the lung capacity up!

I say better to be on the beach wishing you were out there than to be out there wishing you were on the beach.
