What impulse buy have you done recently or within the last two weeks?

My impulse buy this week has been two Raleigh 20 Stoaways. One mint condition and the other very good condition in their original condition minus some scratches here and there. Bought one from eeeBay and one Gumtree.

My question now is how to transform them into modern machines?

p/s: should I have disc brakes on them and say Alfine?

D'oh wrong forum should on Bike Forum ... mods please if you can. 🙁

Ordered this today - http://www.evanscycles.com/products/redline/flight-pro-xxl-2012-race-bmx-bike-ec033123

Too old for it really but far better to just get over myself and do something I want to do than not.

2 tickets to T in the Park. Going with daughter Seadog, who is now finding it very hard to concentrate on her exams now.

I bought this last Saturday:

mainly for it's waterproof-ness. We're going to the Maldives for the second week of our Honeymoon in June & the snorkelling looks amazing. Never done it before, but wanna get some nice pics of fishy things....

It's a Nikon AW100, which has just been replaced by the AW110. John Lewis were doing a decent deal on it and while I was ummming and aaaahing, he said that he'd knock a further £30 off it, seeing as it was the last one.
Debated whether to get the newer (more expensive) one, but there's not a massive difference & it was an extra £130. Just gonna go and dunk it in the bath now to see if it works!! Eek! Wish me luck!!

Stumpy, I have been through a few similar cameras (Current is a TG1). Fave party trick is to set the self timer and drop it in your pint, self portrait through beer! 🙂

WHERE??

I bought some Mint Sauce beer mats for a stupid price recently, but they are worth it in a way only people of my generation could appreciate!

CFH - good idea. Slightly concerned thought that you have been through a few of them! I thought they were supposed to be tough!

Thundercats belt.

Winner!

No real impulse buys, but my budget for forks and brakes for my budget single speed project fell victim to impulse the other day, was planning on £200 for both, spent that on each item. Then bought a king headset. And xt trail pedals. And a ti seat post. And a Thomson stem. Would have bought a £40 rear sprocket had they been in stock.

A 'budget' single speed it is no longer. Stoopid (or are they??) impulses!
http://www.flickr.com/photos/61712157@N02/8102301292/in/photostream/lightbox/
I see you have upgraded these:

shimano deore ht2 bb/crank in standard 76mm shell
sturmey sc2 hub
bmx rims and tyres
carradice bag
400mm bmx seatpost for handle bar stem (I like this very much but can you still do the telescopic adjustment i.e. adjust it higher or lower?)

That's nice. I like the Shimano HT2 deore crank you have there.

How easy it is to upgrade modify the Twenty? Especially the BB?

I am thinking along this line ...

1. Shimano crank set ... probably Deore as that's what I can afford.
2. Rims and tyres ... not sure what yet.
3. Rear gear hub ... thinking Alfine 8 speeds.
4. Seatpost ... something longer.
5. Handle bar - wider.
6. Handle bar stem.
7. Handle bar post - like yours but do you need the star fangled nut?

Chewkw
Bottom brackets an odd thread and 76mm wide so takes a bit of creative thinking to get rid of the cotterd cranks, seatpost is 26.8mm so that's a easy swop for a modern post. Steerer tube is a bmx seat post with a modern stem clamped on top it still moves up and down using the original clamp on the headset . The wheels are bmx rims and tyres with a coaster brake. Loads of info about raleigh twentys on Sheldon Brown's website. I quite like the idea of alfine hub and discs would make a nice touring bike.

Cheers Rob.

Yes, I was measuring the seatpost just now so thanks for letting me know. Save me sometime messing about. I think I may have one in that size so let see.

(Edit: The seat post is more than 27.2 as I just tried it with my mt bike seat post ... arrghh)

This looks like a project for me but will cost a bit with Alfine and disc brakes.

I may keep one of them in it's original configuration as it looks mint (will receive this next week) and may just change the rear gearing a bit. i.e. using a larger 21t instead of 17t.

I also have few of Brooks saddles so no problem there.

Now, I need to find a good creative bike shop ... Kinetic comes into mind but not sure if he is willing ...

One of these:

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1238747394/the-vamp-bring-back-the-sound <

From the website

Be one of the first people in the world to receive The Vamp and bring back the rich sound of an authentic speaker. Choose from available colours of red, white or black at a discounted price of £35 (RRP £45).

So if you allow this person to get off the ground by investing you own money (£35 in this case, no not the price you pay this is the amount you invest (other amounts are available & some give quite laughable 'rewards')) you receive a £10 discount & he gets rich if the product works out to be a best seller.

Have I missed something important?

No, I believe this is the price you pay. £35 buys a Vamp. There's a FAQ further down the page for "Can I get more than one Vamp?" but I can't see one for "Can I get a Vamp?"

Very nice. I like!

Three things I want to know.

Q1. What seat post is that and where from? 28.6mm x 400? Shim?

Q2. What steerer tube are you using? Looks very long.

Q3. What have you done to the BB?

I simply don't read it that way as the production hasn't even started, it reads as if you are a backer without any real benefits except you get to get to be at the front of the queue for the sum of £25, assuming it gets off the ground! It does sound like a great idea though.
Perhaps you could ask as you are already signed up?
