Seems to vary from 1GB to 5GB. What do I need?

I'm a very light user, almost always on wifi etc. Very rarely get through more than 0.25Gb. No idea what a heavy user would get through.

I have 4gb atm but could get away with 2gb. I like having too much though, then you don't have to worry about going over.

Depends if you're gonna use it off WiFi a lot and what for.
If you'll be using maps for navigation or a lot of music listening in the car go for the higher end.
Few emails and texts - 1GB should cover it.

The only time I went anywhere near my 4GB limit was when broadband went down and my kid was watching youtube with the phone's 4G connection as a hotspot.

That's a very "How long is a piece of string?" question, unless it's a wind up.

Assuming not, only you will know your kind of usage pattern and therefore how much data you will need.

Go on giffgaff and chop and change each month. 500mb does me fine for £7.50/m

Also no stupid long contract bobbins, and you can buy an unlocked phone through them too.

Not a wind up, so far I've been using a cheap Nokia for phone calls and an iPod Touch for everything else. The iPod connects to the internet with wifi, so I never see how much data I've been using.

Thanks for the tips! 🙂

+1 for giffgaff. Can change tariff (goody bag) each month, all of which are usually better value than contracts anyway. That way you're not tied in to 12-24m on the wrong tariff if you go too high/low on data.

Buy the phone outright (or giffgaff also do unlocked phones on a monthly plan now - you're still only paying for the phone, and freedom to change tariff each month)

Lock everything down and you could get by on 23.2 MB like I do

Yes, depends on what you want to do. There's plenty of useful apps that can work offline, eg maps. Just download them using wifi. And store any music or videos on the phone, instead of streaming it.

If you just want to check your email occasionally, or a few websites, you could probably manage with a few hundred MB per month.

Just make sure you turn off data when you are not using it, otherwise it will still use it up in the background.

I got a deal when I upgraded my contract with EE and have 8 Gb for the price of 4 Gb but even as a pretty heavy phone user I only really get through about 2-3 Gb a month.

If you drive or cycle between home (with wifi) and an office (with wifi), probably not a lot.

If you have a long commute where you're sat watching Netflix on the train, or out and about using google maps and streaming music all the time, quite a bit more.

Get 1GB and see how you go.

At those sort of rates you might just go payg and see what you end up using. Three is 10quid a GB. The contracts and add-ons aren't really much better unless you are very high use. You can also get 120mb for 50p if you know you're going to be out and about using it one day (24h limit for that).

Depends what you are using it for.

My wife probably only uses around 200Mb/month.

I use anywhere between about 2-7Gb depending on how much Spotify I listen to & whether I remember to have the Wi-Fi on.

I'm on an unlimited data package, so it doesn't really matter to me, although I tend to try & remember to stick Wi-Fi on when I can.

1 or 2Gb should be a safe starting point, but as above perhaps get a PAYG contract free SIM from somewhere like Giffgaff to see how you get on & then you can track usage.

When you top up with EE they give you 6 gig for a tenner.

Upgraded from 4 to 20 Gb last week as O2's black friday deal actually made that cheaper! Got close but never gone over 4Gb before, although if you're streaming HD video on 4g you can smash through data very quickly.

I'm waiting for Plusnet's launch £10 for 4mb with unlimited calls and texts sim offer (for existing bb custs), but in the meantime you won't beat Gifgaff for flexibility or price.

Join Three and get unlimited data for some very good prices.

Yep, get a 1 month rolling contract with three with unlimited data, leave everything on and do everything online to give you a worst case scenario.

I can't personally see the point of saving a couple of quid and having to fanny about stopping updates and apps having Web access as you're removing all the 'smart' bits from your smartphone.

I'm on Three unlimited data, when I was getting the train to work I used to get through 8gb or more per month, now I'm cycling it's much lower, although according to my phone I've used 136gb since October 2014, which is a fair amount.

2Gb is probably a minimum for a regular user I'd say. I have wifi at home but not at work and I've never reached my 2Gb limit yet, but often come close.

That plusnet offer looks interesting, though it depends what network they are using (only some work locally, luckily including three).

There isn't really any reason not to buy a phone and a 3 321 sim. That is I think 1p per Mb (or £10 per Gb).

Once you've had the phone a while you'll get a feel for how its going. If you burning through data then you can leap into a SIM only contract even if that is just a week later. But if you are like me you might find the odd £10 top up is all you need. It looks like I've topped up 10 times in the last year. I think it was a mixture of £5 and £10 top ups so say £85-£95 a year
