We will be in touch
we had a new kitchen installed 18 months back and got the Karlby Worktops, which are cheaper than solid wood, with a 3.5mm walnut layer on the top surface :
Good to know
The worktop has a 3.5 mm top layer of solid walnut over particleboard.
The worktop is pre-treated with hard wax oil and no other treatment is necessary until the surface starts to wear.Care instructions
When the surface of the worktop starts to wear or become dry, treat it with wood treatment oil.
it was getting a bit worn/dry looking in a few areas of heavier use so I applied 2 medium thickness coats of Ikea wood treatment oil, with about 24 hrs between coats. it now has a sticky feel to it, even a week later..... any thoughts ? I presume/hope this will go with time and use ?
You did wipe the excess off after each coat?
You sanded the surface before applying it?
err, yes
err, no....
Osmo next time .
Give it a good wipe with a rag soaked with white spirit (or just pour a bit of white spirit on and give it a scrub with a plastic scouring pad - you'll need a few). Hopefully this might dissolve some of the excess oil that's not drying. Leave it to dry and see how it looks.
If it dries ok, then off you go. If not, then you're going to have to wait. I suspect you've put two too-thick coats on and the second one is struggling to dry (oil still cures underneath a touch dry surface).
If it looks like a bag of shite when it dries, then give it a good sand and apply a thin coat of Osmo Top Oil.
While walnut is not exactly full of resin like some other dark timbers, it's dust is very very fine and sticky - like damp flour and requires tag ragging (cleaning with white spirits) after sanding.
Some good advice, many thanks
