Like a mildly dysfunctional family. Unbelievable amounts of petty bickering that at times develops into full blown disputes, but when the chips are down then we usually put them aside and rally round.

I think Luke (muntobiker) summed the place up perfectly a few years back.
Urban dictionary stuff are pretty spot on too.
We've all clambered aboard the conveyor belt, clutching our bombers and hoping the emergency flag is waving while wearing/not wearing a helmet. Back at base the woodburner is chucking out some heat and the Audi is safely parked up the drive. Just occasionally someone actually rides a bike, but the energy to do this needs pies and real ale.
It's a little club full of weirdness and normalness all rolled into one. Everyday is a learning experience and every day I laugh out loud, or maybe cry a little.
Its a bike forum, except, it's more than that.
I was 26 when I discovered the ST forum as a bike-tragic refugee. In January I will be 45.
It was a bike forum you needed the grown up skills of thick skin, self confidence and clarity of thought. It was a glorious, chaotic, mosh pit of free opinion, name calling, freakishness and bike rides.
The like of its heyday, pre-hack, where it managed to balance robust, hilarious offensiveness with human kindness and the best advice and help available for pretty much anything in the world ever, will never be seen again.
It's matured as its users have matured, and is all the worse for po-faced moderation and attempts to monetise its content, which has stolen it's guerilla upstart feel.
I still come here for entertainment on a daily basis, but as it becomes more a forum for snowflakes and the professionally outraged, the fun is slowly being drained away. At some point I imagine I will just stop checking.

Weirdly I felt like this a year/18 months ago. Came back a few weeks back simply because I'm working my notice period and needed something to do between spinning around in my chair, drinking 32 cups of tea each day and staring out the windows. My sabbatical hasn't changed my view of the place apart from the face that the forum Gestapo listen even less to the views of its users. In a world when forums seem to be dying left, right and centre you'd think having the most popular cycling forum around might make them improving the user experience? Instead we have a forum that feels like its had zero form of UAT done on it, constant pop ups about our privacy and a constant stream of adverts. And a classifieds forum which everyone seemed to love replaced by a crap version of the pinkbike classifieds which was always way down my list of places to have a browse for parts after here, Retrobike and eBay...
