...where would it be? Obviously it has to be very close to pretty sweet MTB trails, preferably not too expensive (Switzerland and maybe Morzine etc. are out because of cost!) and have seasons and a good amount of sunshine hours.

Are you suggesting we invade Italy?

Might work.

Sierra Nevada. Close enough to the sea, not full of tourists, cheap, big mountains, great trails, excellent road riding, 30C+ in summer, snow in winter, great food.

Frieburg, Valencia, Aix-en-Provence or San-Sebastian are the places I have been that I could really imagine living in, enjoying life while still being able to make a living.

Seeing how I could live anywhere in Europe, I suppose then that would have to mean where I am now.

Hmmm, makes me think... 😕

still being able to make a living.

Wasn't part of the criteria!

Although a lot of Europe/the world you could probably sell up in the UK and retire there.

Re: Morzine cost - I had a look at homes out there a couple of years ago when I was flash.

Theres two types, 1) close to a lift or "ski in, ski out" (even if it's not really) loadsamoney or 2) a 5 mins drive or 10 min ride away or ideally in a non-lift village cheapasbuttons well compared to 1 anyway. I guess they're expensive to maintain though as they have to keep that rustic look.

As for the original question, France. Not massively fussed where, not Paris, probably not the Alps but an hour or so down the road might work, can't stand snow. Frankly if I had the time/money now to learn the language to a working standard I'd go now.

Why? Better work life balance, work to live ethos etc, more community, better infrastructure, good climate, more progressive politics, better media, green agenda, the list goes on.

Canada. Most definitely Canada. I am *sure* its in the EU.

If not, give me a year and I will do some action research and let you know.

Saltburn 😀

This is my realistic option! Mostly for the fish and chips at the pier, the riding's not bad I suppose

Nothing to see here, move along...............

I think this changes with your life ....
Where you might like in your 20's is often hell for retirement... steep snowy hills are great when you're young less so when you're 75 and tottering
Places I'd like are often not great for younger kids ..

I lived in loads of places some at the right time in life and others at the wrong time.

For the sake of plucking somewhere I might say Cyprus...beaches and mountains ... ??

Mrs Wachowchow wants to move up to Sutherland from tropical Hampshire. We have local friends up there that own a croft which we could afford with the equity in our current house. They are not selling but she is using that as a guide.
As beautiful as it is, I am not sure. I am going to send her up there in the depths of winter to see how she fairs. My guess is she will be fine but it will be me mincing about in the tundra.

We have friends that were looking to buy a place in Sicily. But apparently the mafia don't make good neighbours. Something about showing up and insisting that you have debts that nobody told you about. And needing to sell them your house at a bargain price to pay them off.

Haute Vienne, great for VTT and road biking, I love it here. 32 deg today, 90 mins on the road bike, 6km dog walk then 60 mins swimming in Lac St Pardoux. Life is good.

Finns are also very nice people who don't go all crazy about PC. 😀

Most importantly coz I like guns and they got plenty of them there. 😆

Unfortunately, I cannot understand them ... except a few words. 😆

Thought about this from time to time, and I'm perfectly happy living where I do.
I love the country I was born and brought up in, there's a wide variety of different landscapes within a fairly reasonable drive, I understand the language and with my memory, trying to learn another at my age would not be a lot of fun, plus all my friends live fairly close by.
Oh, and the sea is never more than 72 miles away from any point inland, and I love being near the sea.
I could probably cope with living in Eire, the pace of life would definitely suit me...

As long as I don't have to find a job, it'd be somewhere close to Snowdonia for me.

Great riding, the most stunning scenery, away from it all and the coast close by. And I speak Welsh.

It's full of win. If only there was work there .....

As a resident of Cardiff, I live in Europe. But if I had to list somewhere else I would like to live, it would probably be northeastern Germany. Say, somewhere in Mecklenburg, within an easily-doable distance of Berlin.

Go west Ito Perugia Superflii instead.
Massively cheaper property, food, etc with the same and better benefits.
Currently sat watching the sun rise behind the mountains above Gualdo.

Haute Vienne is the other place. "Land of a thousand lakes" is its name.and so much activities you could almost never repeat one

Whaaat?
There is no jungle here... Plenty of forests (pine, fir and mostly) with some mosquitoes.

If I could choose I'd live winters up north at Arctic circle and would visit warm places few times a year.

Being in Italy and France for the last few weeks does make you appreciate home too, the ease, the convenience, familiarity etc, the language, the decent cost of living, just sitting round the table eating as a family.
Sure, it's great that where I am is lovely, green, hot, sunny, but it's not home.

I'm going with leafy West Berks

I'm sure its still got the Italian charm and scenery, but its missing the coast+beaches of Tuscany. Obviously you pay a price for these. Just outside Lucca is a lot cheaper. "A Place In The Summer Sun" featured the region not long ago - it was very affordable!

Tricky one, I would say Andalucia - have enjoyed a few road & MTB holidays there. That said I think I'd start to get bored after a couple of weeks, for a holiday it's a nice change of pace but not sure about living there.

Sweden. Pretty much without any doubt, Sweden. If I had to choose a second choice, Canadia, but primary choice: Sweden.

Every time I go there I find something else to like about it and the reasons now are getting almost too long to list.

Thanks everyone! Haute Vienne sounds awesome, I admit I had never heard of it.

So, the dream list is now:

South Austria - Radenthein, near the lakes etc.
environs of Granada
environs of Girona
Haute Vienne

Our bit of Germany in SW Black Forest is great, very pleased to be here. Proper continental summers and cold dry winters. Can see the Swiss alps, Tiger, Munch, Jungfrau from the house and round to Mont Blanc on a clear day. No desire to return to the UK though I do miss Edinburgh.

Basel 40mins
France 45 mins
Switzerland mountains 90mins
Austria, Livigno and Italy 3hrs
Finale 6hrs by car

Schwarzwald is definitely up there - beautiful and as you say, close to a LOT!

My wife was so close to getting a job in Switzerland just on the border, that I did have dreams of living just inside Germany until it went pear-shaped!

Superflii - Perugia has as much coasts as you can handle - the new road up to Ancona is awesome and take your pick from there.
Ski resorts above Gualdo, so much riding and climbing it would take years to scratch the surface.

Define "affordable" ...

Where I am now! I moved to Konstanz south Germany at the start of the year it's perfect for me...

Decent cx and xc trails from the door (well 10 mins ride), great (and safe!) road riding from the door, proper downhill 60 mins away in the alps.

France 1hr 20 away, Switzerland 5 minute walk away (literally!)

Don't get me wrong, I love home (Sheffield) and visit regularly, the g.f. is German loves the uk too and we always take in a trip to BPW when we visit - the Welsh uplift drivers love her accent and always try and teach her Welsh!!

However, I always look forward to heading back to Germany .... which I think is a good sign!

The only problems at the moment..... 6 bikes in a one bed apartment, and the Swiss buying the entire content of all the supermarkets every weekend! Other than that ... it's fab!

Never been but I used to think Biarritz was a good spot, now think Girona might be it - or maybe I just want to live near David Millar?!

I wouldn't move to abroad but a holiday home is a possibility, unfortunately wouldn't get much use until I retire so don't do yet.

Ha ha! That's exactly what we would have done - either lived near St. Gallen and done our shopping in Germany or lived in Germany and commuted in!! Now it's up to me to earn more money (I work from home so not a biggie where I live) and we can choose where to go therefore, not based on where my wife gets a job.
