and wanted to wake up to a truly beautiful view (please don't say "what about the wife?") in the morning, where would you go?
Disclaimer:
needs to be easily reachable from Manchester.
Cheetham Hill. Strangeways tower will look like a Moroccan Mosque in the dawn light.
Hope that helps.
Rivington. At least you are guaranteed one decent ride.
Layby in 1800 Les Arcs view of Mt Blanc and all that...
However
If you and your missus had one night away from the kids
If you're thinking of the view you have your priorities wrong
Jambourgie
I'll keep that one in mind for future trips, you can be sure. ๐

The Lakes, the Peak District and the Dales are all within easy reach. What else are you after? Just a lay-by at the side of the road or somewhere off the road with a pub within staggering distance? You're spoilt for choice really, but since it's my local patch I'll recommend the Staffordshire Moorlands, looking out over the Roaches. I never get tired of that view, but it can be bleak up there.

There's a smaller laybe just east too. Have used them for evening lake shore BBQ's but not stayed overnight. The more discrete tucked away places don't often have the grand views.
There's some cracking spots in Mid wales, but Im not sure what you call easily accessible from the grim north.
Ainsdale beach for the sunset.
Or that other spot you see campervans parked up at on Marine Drive near Southport.
Coniston shore would be nice, few good pubs for night before too.
Otherwise for a quiet spot the layby where you park to hike to Dulyn bothy is pretty aweinspiring- https://maps.google.co.uk/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&t=h&oe=UTF8&msa=0&msid=211585189320309156055.00049f927cc1a241a65dc the start of this route is the layby. Pretty steep though on the way up

Castlerigg farm campsite, superb views of Skiddaw with swathes of purple heather and a glimpse of bassenthwaite. You can even see the mountain through the shower window, which I love.
Places we have woken up in in our camper with a nice view near Manc....
Find Moel Arthur car park in the Clywdians and drive down the hill a bit to vale of Clywd. Park on rhs on a track by the gate. Heather is lovely right now
World's end above Llangollen on road to Minera
car parks near Windgather Rocks
Behind Joe Brown's in Capel Curig - OK you have to walk about 50m to get a view but you can walk to Bryn Tyrch pub for tea
On the B6270 off the M6 near Penrith there are some large laybys with a nice view
