When I first saw guys doing their Flying Squirrel impressions about 10 years or so ago, my first thoughts were "wow, that looks cool, I'd love to give that a go" followed by "I bet inside 10 years some fool starts to take it to the extreme by trying to get as close as possible to the ground without actually hitting it".

Seems I was right! 😯

I'd still love to have a go, but I'd be content coming within 100m or so vertically of anything solid I reckon. That guy clearly doesn't fear the consequences in any way shape or form!

There's a video out there of one of them actually hitting the ground, along with all his blog posts about being injured.

Iirc he'd set up a load helium of balloons on strings and the deal was he was gonna fly past and break all the strings on the edges of cliffs, madness!

my mate used to do it , tandem master in madrid over 300 base jumps , thousands of plane jumps and dozens close prox, still jumps around 10 times a day when busy but gave up the base jumping an close prox when first chute failed and reserve just opened in time, dislocated shoulder for his effort, loses around 3 fellow jumpers a year to "going in "
hmm id still love to do it though ............

and why does he even bother with a helmet?

Holds the camera + helps to keep his goggles on
