I can't go into too much detail but some scum sucking pigs opened a catalogue account using my details. Credit limit of £1500 and already a grand in on branded clothing. Goods were delivered to a nominated collection point.

I feel a tad bilious at the thought.

Anybody else been affected by this crime?

Wow. No, I always assumed it was an urban myth/media frenzy.

Hope you get it sorted. How did you find out?

I had my bank account emptied to the tune of over a grand a few years ago thanks to someone cloning my card.

HSBC were actually quite good at giving me my money back, and it all came good.

The police were next to useless though. The scum bag had used my cloned card to pay for a rental deposit. Despite providing the name of the rental company, and them knowing the blokes address the police weren't interested in chasing it up.

my old Abbey account got done for over 6K five years ago.

received and email from what to all intents and purposes looked like one from Abbey (layout was exactly the same, etc). followed a link and read some guff. didn't think about it for a few months till i went back to the UK and looked at my account.

turns out the scammer had a slightly different http. he had thrown some letters into it. even Abbey apologised to me for that saying i wasn't the first and that they were aware of the scam.

i got the money back, but it was a little annoying at the time. no longer use internet banking with them as i don't trust it. bit of a pain as i'm in germany so can't easily check my account.

Happened to me a few years ago. A delightful young lady half-inched my handbag from a bar round the corner from my house in Hackney.

I realised very quickly and had cards cancelled before they could be used but a couple of weeks later I had a call from Argos Stevenage checking up on the account that I was trying to set up.

They were very cheery when I pointed out that I was in Hackney, not in their store. The staff apprehended the nice lady who was using my drivers licence - however from the description she was definitely not the thief. So there was a group - or details just get sold on to whoever will take a punt at them. This lot didn't get to pass themselves off as me for very long.

yup - bank fraud investigation was essentially delegated to the banks to sort out themselves. Gordon Brown and co. did that.
Essentially it's up to the banks to balance expenditure on fraud protection with payments they have to make to put things right.
They'll only pass on intelligence for the big scammers to the cops.

Mine was CC fraud, and in amongst lots and lots for mail order shoes were shedloads of ryanair flights. I bet not a single person was apprehended at the boarding gate.

How can a catalogue company offer 'nominated collection points'?

Bizarre as its wide open to fraud.

No two ways about it the police just don't care in your case they would almost certainly have caught them. Recently someone damaged a mates car in supermarket car park, he knew who it was the police said would check video. 6 months later still not got back to him. I live in a rural area and know where the police will be 3 police cars will be at 1pm at the same cafe every day. That's clear statement of we do care about crime?

Many years ago the social decided they would reduce the amount of people investigating fraud as they believed it was not cost efficient. IE it was costing them more than it was saving. Of course it soon becomes obvious to people and the result it is a big increase in people working when on the dole. No different here as this is blatant I know you are going to do nothing about it so I am safe to do it?

Sorry, I don't understand, it sounds like you were tricked by a phishing scam. Why is that Abbey's fault? Why did they apologise?

Collect plus ?

Bizarre as its wide open to fraud.

Isn't it just - hadn't even though about how open it was to that before - guess there must be CCTV at most garages though?

Crikey that's a lot of money gone ... very scary.

I bought an air ticket recently on the airline website and within the next day my card company/bank text me to confirm if I bought the ticket. All my card usage was blocked until I confirmed.

Surely your card company/bank should have done the same if they see something fishy. A text to confirm should do. 🙄

Ninfan - I asked if CCTV footage at the collection point would be examined and was told "no".

It's pathetic.

Also - my surname used in opening account was misspelt! WTF.

Yes, you can on Police request.

Also - my surname used in opening account was misspelt! WTF.

I think so long as the initials on your card are similar the payment will go through.
