There's a bike I quite fancy on Gumtree.
Whilst the price, pics and language used in the ad are all reasonable, a lack of detail about size and spec etc. is setting off a few alarm bells.
It would be a fair old schlep for me to go and buy it, so what can I do in advance to minimise risk.
Would the police check a serial number for me if I contacted them - is there even a central database which it could be checked against?
I'd prefer not to make the link public, but if there are any Manchester / Oldham / West Yorkshire locals who would be interested, I could email a link.

Speak to the seller on the phone - if it still feels 'wrong' then walk away.
Contact the seller, ask them for the bike serial number on the frame.
Proceed according to their response 🙂
