I remember in the 80's reading/having read to me a short story about a haunted school. The punchline is that the School is populated with the Children who *would* have been born if their potential parents hadn't died in the war. (Not sure which one.) The teacher's "hypothetical-kids" are there too.
Identify it for me.

Sounds a little like Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children book/film. Not sure when that book was written though.
