I suspect the performance difference would be a rizla paper's width, if at all?

Not much in it, but if you get the Acer , you could always add more ram later and it has the better cpu.
The Acer's good value but it'll be a bit plasticky. Seen a similar model IIRC and totally flat keys instead of scooped and poor sound. Screen okay but tight viewing angles. Plasticky does not mean crap btw - it won't fall to bits on you.
Average user on a budget (don't know if that description fits you) will be fine with an i3 processor.
