Or maybe it's GMTV running out of things to say about "The Big Freeze " .People whinging about not having their bins emptied for 3 weeks ? Oh shame !Perhaps they need to sit and watch the pictures coming out of Haiti .They would have something to moan about then .
Oh and one other thing why do people still insist on killing themselves trying to rescue dog's that have gone on to thin ice ? 🙄
Haiti's situation sounds truly dire. There was a BBC journo visiting a hospital and talking on R4 this morning. What he was witnessing was so horrible he was struggling to keep it together.
Oh I agree however if we are paying tax on everything along with, income tax to the government and a local tax to the council we should expect pavements to be at least cleared once over the past month of ice. Our area is impossible- plus we have alot of older residents. What should they do? Stay in the house and not move (but still ensure they pay their taxes ontime?).
When you pay taxes on everything it automatically gives you the right to complain IMO.
You can't compare our situation with Haiti. We live here, they live there. Not relevant.
But yeah, people should wear proper shoes so they can walk on the snow and let the dog die if its stupid enough to jump in a frozen lake. I certainly would.
Oh and one other thing why do people still insist on killing themselves trying to rescue dog's that have gone on to thin ice ?
out of interest did the dog survive?
out of interest did the dog survive?
out of interest did the dog survive?
not the one up here - no

So you complain about some people not have compassion or understanding of the plight of others and then make a flippant remark about someone dying trying to save a beloved pet?
Nice one. 🙂
i used to break the ice to go pike fishing in that lake years back
Buzzlightyear - I heard that - small girl with 'bones sticking out of her legs' and 'one foot hanging off' and no pain relief or treatment available.
If it had been my 8 year old daughter I'm not sure I'd have been as lucid as her dad was about what needed to be done for his country
Was pretty distressing to listen to.
just seen footage of about 50 'christian' missionaries, getting on the first plane out of Haiti. maybe they were just heading off to get some supplies, I can't believe they'd be fleeing the country unwilling to help in a time of great need, oh no...
your 1st mistake was watching GMTV
don't watch the news or buy news papers, you'll find you won't miss much and if there is a genuine story (haiti) amongst all the other rubbish and scare mongering then you'll get to hear about from forums, work colleagues, friends etc.
😯
I can't believe people are complaining about snow and ice on the same thread as Haiti earthquake victims.
Or even suggesting the irrelevance due to locale.
Sad indeed.
I can't believe people are complaining about snow and ice on the same thread as Haiti earthquake victims.
It's Hora.
[shrugs]
Ok its awful about Haiti, however if that hadnt happened we would still be complaining about the snow and ice, also they didnt empty my bin yesterday but the took all the recycling stuff, whats that all about FFS.
Was pretty distressing to listen to.
It was the screaming in the background that got me.

We all live here.

So nobody has the right to complain about aboslutely anything that happens or goes on in this country then since there is ALWAYS something worse happening to someone else in another country?
We all live here.
Of course, but the 2 situations the OP is talking about are not related in any way. Of course someone in the UK isn't going to stop worrying about all that is happening in their life because there has been an earthquake somewhere else in the world.
Otherwise there would be only one thread on the forum today, one news story on tv, etc.
edit: there you go, jon has said the same thing.
I can't believe people are complaining about snow and ice on the same thread as Haiti earthquake victims.
Sighs. The OP was trying to draw parallels between how something very close to home is affecting us all on a daily basis (and injuring people) with a tragedy somewhere in the world.
So the next time we trip over and hurt our knee before cussing we should think ‘wait, is there an earthquake somewhere around the world’ first and then castigate oneself for being potentially selfish?
Jesus wept, the news is also covering the Haitian tragedy. Should all other home news stop? Things that directly affect people now can be at the front of their minds you know.
My ice post REFERS to the OP's posting.
What next? Next time the Scottish Idiot ****s up- does he merely have to point to a disaster around the world and say 'buck up you idiots, you've got it cushy here'?
Exactly hora.
But when are the bin men coming?
What Scottish Idiot do you refer to? There are many of us
No idea. The temp is low enough that it isnt a hazard IMO. In addition, the roads around our area are sheet ice so it would be disastrous if a bin truck came down here. Last year a neighbours car was stoved into a wall by a reversing bin truck.
What Scottish Idiot do you refer to? There are many of us
There can be only one.
I think all Roland is asking for is an attempt by the media and the general public to react proportionately to difficulties. It will never happen because it relates to one's everyday experience...
For example, one of my neighbours (Eddie) had a verbal fit because one of my other neighbours (Ian) had let his grass grow too long "makes the place look like a slum!" While I agree it would be nice if the grass was cut, it was a huge over-reaction but not an atypical suburbanite response. If Eddie ever spent some time in a real slum, he would probably react differently.
Ok so i assume his 'nationality' determines his mental aptitude then?
There can be only one.
Connor MacLeod? What does he have to with anything?
Ok so i assume his 'nationality' determines his mental aptitude then?
Whats your point caller?
Just curious as to why you called him 'Scottish Idiot'. Do you refer to the English politicians as 'English Guy'?
It was the 'we live here, they live there' comment that prompted my reply, not the fact that earthquakes and bin emptying have nothing in common.
It was the 'we live here, they live there' comment that prompted my reply
Sure, I've been up since 5 though, so my argumentative skills aren't quite there today.

apparently, in yank land, according to a paper i was reading (online) in america (all of or someparts, i dont know) its the homeowners responsibility to clear the paths up to and the public walkways across the front of thier property, and not only that, its the LAW that it HAS to be done.
if not done by 6hrs from the end of the snowfall, they get a visit and a warning, if not done by 10am the following day, the local services do it, and bill them $250

If he was Welsh the he would be a Welsh idiot, Scottish the Scottish idiot, English then just an idiot unless he from Yorkshire then he becomes a Yorkshire tw*t 😆 if from London a Cockney prat or from Ireland then an Irish dick, thats fair enough IMO. 😆
Olly, that is a great idea. I think there is the risk of the householder being sued here.
thebikechain - if I said 'that English idiot' you wouldnt have a clue who I meant. My point is therefore valid.
That's what i was thinking Flippin chap. Thanks for the clarification. 😉

Everyone knows that there is no such thing as a 'Welsh idiot'. We're all geniuses. So there!
English then just an idiot
Well I suppose that would be a tautology 😉
Olly - my relations live in Canada and thats certainly the law there. My uncle has a snow-blower, just for doing his driveway and the pavement outside his house.
And FWIW, I'm going to worry about my own life, here in Blighty, my trouble getting to work, my bins not being emptied (which is an issue with the amount of rubbish a 4 month old baby makes) before worrying about and admittedalty tragic situation in Haiti, a country which I've never even bothered to spare a thought before so I'm not going to come onto here and be told I need a reality check whilst I've enough problems of my own here. Thanks. That bothered about it? Get on the plane to Haiti then and make a difference if life is so problem-free here.
It was the screaming in the background that got me.
They were crying because they'd just heard someone over here hadn't had their wheelie bin emptied for a fortnight even though they paid their Council Tax! I don't think they have Council tax in Haiti, so it was something of a shock to them and put all their problems into perspective.
The English parliament is full of them. I think it could cross the party divide but if anyone says Boris is one, I'll have 'yer 8)

before worrying about and admittedalty tragic situation in Haiti, a country which I've never even bothered to spare a thought before so I'm not going to come onto here and be told I need a reality check whilst I've enough problems of my own here
You see, I blame Thatcher for this kind of attitude.

nice
I'd be interested to see how many of these people saying we need to worry about Haiti, not our own country actually put some of their hard earned into a charity every month that would help aid agencies out there to sort stuff out? Despite my views that I need to worry about getting my own life sorted back out due to a bit of snow bringing the whole country to a standstill, I do actually pay various charities money every month via a standing order. So I am doing my bit. Whose doing theirs while whinging on an internet forum?
I donate to international aid agencies - as long as they're not connected to God in any way. Not by standing order though - as and when I can afford it - and I commend you for doing so DBW.
Iraqi's etc etc suffer daily and I'm painfully aware of the total inequality in Palestinian. It doesnt stop my capacity to care.
A little base, however do you guys lack the ability to emphase on different levels or multi-task? 🙄
Hora - I'm not sure what is more shocking - your daily ritual of forum seppuku or your grammar.
mudsux, we could both enroll on a grammar course?
Alternatively, hora you could just do the seppuku thing. 🙂
I donate to international aid agencies - as long as they're not connected to God in any way.
I donate £15 a month (+GiftAid)to British Red Cross, because they always seem to be one of the first on the scene when there is a disaster like this.
I like the work Christian Aid do too. But like you I'm not all that comfortable with the religious side of it - especially when they are working in non-Christian areas.
Alternatively, hora you could just do the seppuku thing.
Not a chance.

I know what you mean G, they do wonderful stuff for sure, but I just wonder what kind of mission they're on once the clearing up's been done and people are ripe for conversion.
Just curious as to why you called him 'Scottish Idiot'
Because he's scottish, and an idiot. I'm sure the poster wasn't implying that all Scots are idiots, but nonetheless if you wish to read into it that way, you may be lending that daft assertion some credence after all...

I'm glad it wasn't just me thinking that.
As billy connolly said, paraphrased, there are only so many things you can care about, you only have so much empathy to spare, and most people have sufficient things going on in their immediate area to (seriously) consider worrying about things from other places. However they do put things into perspective.
People of my grandparents era would generally put up with things when times were tough, and find their own solution to problems. It seems people of my era just whine about things and expect everyone to do things for them. I can see the taxes>roads point of view, but that can be taken to any level and made rediculous, they've done a good job of keeping the major routes open. If there are loads of older people around your house that can't get out and the council can't grit, YOU help them.
As for saving the dog, well thats your call depending on how much you like your pets. I'd find a way of getting mine back, probably not by walking on the ice and falling through.
coffeeking- I see where you are coming from. You also forget the level of taxation we are at. The more we pay the more we can reasonable expect. The fact we pay taxes on fuel, a road tax and VAT on any new car should mean we expect a gritted road as the norm.
Yes. This winter has been harsher than some however our area still hasnt seen any council workers for weeks. What do they do again?
The fact we pay taxes on fuel, a road tax and VAT on any new car should mean we expect a gritted road as the norm.
Why? Those taxes are to dissuade you from buying/using a car, not to pay for the upkeep of the roads. Some reading: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pigovian_tax
im with cofeeking
too many people expect the world to revolve around them in modern britain
oldfart your thread is an amazing example of how right you were!!
a) grit wont work on sheet ice, or snow for that matter, it only works to stop moisture freezing, so light freezing rain, freezing fog etc. It can work in snow if theres a constant streem of cars passing over it to constanly mash it up.
b) a snowplough wont shift sheet ice either (the clue's in the name)
For the sake of a weeks inconvenience every 10 years in parts of the country, is it worth the millions it would cost to buy in enough gritters and snow ploughs to cover every single road? Bearing in mind each gritter can only cover a few hundred miles of road? and it wouldnt have saved us? Our road was under a sheet of ice despite being gritted.
It became sheet ice after weeks of no action. Basically snow compacted down by cars etc, more snow, then freeze. I estimated it was circa 2-3inches thick (the ice) on our roads.
On the rescuing dog on ice. I'd like to say I wouldnt rescue my dog as its mad to put yourself at risk. I really would like to say I wouldnt attempt it but I can see why someone would react in that situation. FFS- our dog sits on my lap and looks me in the eyes for hours most evenings! I dont think I could avoid his gaze in that situation 🙁
The fact we pay taxes on fuel, a road tax and VAT on any new car should mean we expect a gritted road as the norm.
Why those taxes in particular? After all, none of them particularly have any connection with the upkeep of roads.
I wouldnt jump in a river to save such a gayers dog either 😆
I too watched this for maybe 60 seconds and she camE across as a prize fool.
I got the impression the male interviewer was less than impressed with her too.
GMTV: Really struggling with things to say by the look of things.
However, did you see the BBC news report from Haiti, of the dozens of American Christian Missionaries fleeing in their aircraft?
However, did you see the BBC news report from Haiti, of the dozens of American Christian Missionaries fleeing in their aircraft?
Reminds me of the Ethiopian South Park sketch.
I eat my breakfast in front of the news on a morning.
I tried GMTV for a one-off change today.
Never again.
Then over to Trisha to see what I'm missing in my life (a very drunk father today trying to persuade his kids he's sober), and then onto Jeremy Kyle if I have the stomach for it.
One day, I too want to do all my dirty laundry in public.
Then whatever life throws at me never seems so awful as the people who appear on those shows.
(just kidding about Jeremy Kyle!)
dogs should be on a lead.......

jeebus i cant believe some people actually watch gmtv
I thought it was just old post menopausal downtrodden houswives with autistic children and people in care homes where the tv is behind some shatterproof glass and the channel cant be changed
Funny that my downtrodden mrs watches GMTV and we have an Autistic Child, how did you come across this fact..can you point me towards the study. ❗

I'd love to have a dig at the evils of the church, but supposedly in this instance they were asked to leave because they had no housing/food and they COULD get out of there and make way for people who actually could help
"It seems people of my era just whine about things and expect everyone to do things for them"
A nation that has made a virtue of idleness and complaining. Apocalyse now!

We accept mediocre.
Italy was described as politically corrupt however England is just as much so. We used to lead the world didnt we? We had an empire, pioneered. However since then we have destroyed ourselves accepting our lot is better than others so we shouldnt complain. We lost momentum after the first world war. Then post-second world war everything slowed- we started saying 'think about the starving children in Africa whilst eating your dinner properly young billy' instead of being told 'young billy why dont you help Africa properly'? at the dinner table.
The 'we have it better' will eventually grind us down.
Come on folks we do need a reality check but not the ones that you prescribe.
Why? Those taxes are to dissuade you from buying/using a car, not to pay for the upkeep of the roads. Some reading: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pigovian_tax
Presumably income tax is a tax to persuade you not to have a job?
Oh, yeah. I see your point.
Presumably income tax is a tax to persuade you not to have a job?
Income Tax isn't a Pigovian tax.
