While out on the bike yesterday, I went to lift my seatpost up and pushing the QR lever my thumb went extemely double jointed and hurt, so gave it a squeeze and it went back into place.

Its a little swollen but movement is fine.

I did the same thing ages ago when I landed on my thumb pretending to be a mechanic (jumping on a wheel brace) but can't remember whether I just had to rest it?

??

jt 😉

Pretty much but if you having problem with it or it's still very painful over the next couple of weeks or so then go and see your GP.

As I understand it, this is what happens - once you've dislocated a joint, it has a tendency to dislocate in the future. I think the fact that you were able to pop it back in yourself suggests that it's very likely to pop out again. When I dislocated my little finger try as I might, there was no way I could get it back in myself. It hasn't dislocated since.
