...it would be better if links within threads opened in a new tab.

Or right click 'open in new tab', or hold finger on link if on ipad/iphone.

Or right click and open in new tab.

Yes, I know how to do it. But quite often forget as the standard for this kind of thing everywhere else is to open a new tab if moving off site.

First world problems, I know.

Opening in a new tab annoys me unless I request it to. Middle mouse button click is pretty easy too!

And I still maintain that you're wrong. And this is why:

If a page opens in the same tab, you can override this behaviour. If a page opens in a new tab / window you cannot, you're stuck with it.

Fair enough, preferences being what they are.

I just don't get in what circumstance you would want to leave the site completely by following a link from within a forum thread. To me, the default for links from within the threads themselves should be a new tab thing.

Surely that keeps more traffic on the site, more in terms of potential advertising revenue etc etc. Rather than click a link and leave the site altogether.

That's what the 'back' button is for.

That's exactly why they do it, IMO.

I think it would be better if links opened a window to another dimension. Is there a keyboard shortcut for that?

I know how to work the world wide web. I've met the make who invented it. He was a bit of a knob tbh.

Eh? They direct people off the site to generate advertising from the site? Or are you saying that more is generated from a hit to the site from elsewhere, i.e. via a back button click? If so, that would make much more sense.

Has nobody started a new thread titled something like "I disagree" and linked to it from this thread yet? 😆

Maybe if a 'Like Button' was added it would be easy to see how the opinions stacked up on this issue?

Agreed. This is the only forum I've ever been on which doesn't open links in a new tab.

No, I mean, that's why sites open external links in a new tab / window. You'll Never Leave!!

I suppose leaving and returning might mean extra advert impressions as the page is reloaded, though if I were to guess I'd hazard that the STW reasoning is simply that's how it happens to be and no-one's changed it, rather than any sort of intentional business decision.

.. this is the most disappointingly dull thread ever. That'll teach me to be lured in by a catchy title.

Because if you open the forum thread in a new tab, by right clicking for example, then it's fine to leave that tab. 🙂

I had no doubt that STW logic would prevail.

And I get sarcasm too. Haven't met the bloke who invented that though.

This reminds me of something I've thought - how easy it is to get annoyed by an extra, unnecessary click of the mouse, or a bit of extra mouse movement. I know I get phenominally wound up by it sometimes!
How bleedin LAZY are we these days?

I agree with the OP - the likes of PSA's etc mean multiple "back button" clicks, etc.
New tab means I can look, buy, close etc all without ever leaving where I was on here.
Not a single other forum I use now or have ever used doesn't do this.
Except this one and its antiquated system.

Thats why they make the site so slow to load too, so you keep hitting refresh thinking its just stuck. Shhh, dont tell anyone 😆

There is a way to make the link open in a new tab:

Open in a new tab then 😉 You decide how and where, along with functionality that your browsing client provides.
Not a single other forum I use now or have ever used doesn't do this.

/me attempts to decrypt the number of negations there.
This site follows standards.
Most sites ignore standards.
But then loads of sites are not back button safe. At least this one is.

I much prefer the option to open a link in a new tab rather than the site forcing that on me.

It's a heap of crap, the old version was better, at least you could get onto the last page of a thread without first loading the first. More page impressions? [/tinfoilhat]

This site follows standards.

What standards? Certainly doesn't function like any other forum I've ever used.
