I do think Merlinman's closing of the Sophie Ellis Bextor thread was unnecessary. Was pretty well-mannered apart from a couple of moronic comments (which could easily just have bin removed). Debate and discussion is good, I think there's bin too much closing of interesting threads down recently. I think maybe the mods need to take a step back and have a think about what the word 'forum' actually means. If this place gets boring cos people can't discuss things freely, then the traffic to the site will decrease etc etc etc.

Yeah it's all about balance but I don't think clamping down on stuff so much is very positive.

I agree with Elf. Scanned that Bextor thread and didn't see anything warranting a closing. It could have gone either way to be fair, but really it hadn't imo.

There's bin some great discussion on here recently, such as the 'Women in MTBing' one. That was really interesting and enlightening. Yeah, there were a few knobs being silly, but I spose you've got to expect that on a public forum really. What is good about STW is that most discussions are a lot more pleasant and intelligent than some other fora. I think having a 'core' of mainly intelligent, sensible and decent folk helps to 'police' things quite effectively; knobs stand out more and look stupid, which might dissuade others from being knobs.

Personally I don't think there is any place for threads that are only about celebs looks and only valuing them on that - apart from anything else they always go of into sleazebag fantasy world.
