ok guys, have been looking everywhere this afternoon for a msp purely of the south west, ideally bigger than a metre by a metre..

it needs to cover Devon, Cornwall, Somerset, and South Wales.

have been on the Ordnance survey site and they just seem to sell little maps of much smaller areas.

have also looked on ebay, and they start about about £30 on there! i just want a map I can pin up on a wall and put pins into it for various locations.

anyone got any ideas?

cheers,Millzy

Bookshop? We got a UK poster map from waterstones they had tons in there. Not sure if they had regional ones though but worth a look.

You could always create an image file from your mapping website of choice and have that printed out..?

Road Atlas? Or have they disappeared with the advent of GPS?

I don't think that this is what you're asking for but I'm proud of it so I'll post anyway...

1:50,000 OS map of the South West wallpapered on my wall. Not a great photo, sorry.

Are any 2nd hand 1:250,000 OS maps available on ebay or Amazon?
The SW sheet would be ideal

eg http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Routemaster-Series-OS-map-of-South-West-England-South-Wales-sheet-8-1981-/221700145643?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item339e5bc1eb

You don't want to come any further down than shown on there, it's rubbish down here, no trails at all & sea is always flat 😉

The old OS 1:250,000 south west map is unlikely to be ideal, because it was a double sided map (printed on both sides), so two of them would be needed to show all the area when wall mounted.

I would suggest you look at this website for customised mapping. Select the 1:250,000 scale and the poster landscape format. The price is £24.99, but I think that is not bad value.

There is the OS select service where they print you a custom map of where ever you want. Can sent folded or rolled.

Never used them, just found it via Google

EDIT - may require a significant number of beer tokens!

Why does it have to be one huge map? Can't you join a number of maps together? We joined 4 maps and wallpapered them to our landing wall, so we can see the whole of the Peak District.

Vickypea & edd,

I love the idea of this! Once we have bought our own house I intend to do this. Is a case of simply getting wallpaper paste and getting busy or is it a bit more in depth? My DIY ninja skills are currently low (have been renting too long and have no need to do any!)

Cheers NiD

northernerindevon - I used OS select maps for two reasons. 1) I was able to centre each map in such a way that there was no overlap between maps. 2) OS select maps are available rolled, rather than folded.

I cut off the borders and started wallpapering from the top left of the wall. Unfortunately it's a complete pain to do as the paper used by OS select is not waterproof so distorts when wet. I took my time and the finished wall is great. That said if I was to do it again I would see whether I could get the maps printed on a better/ more appropriate paper.

For what it's worth my wall required 20 maps. 3 and a bit tall and 4 and a bit wide (obviously the "and a bit" had to be a complete map).

edd - that is bl***y genius! That is exactly what we want to do out our place - once we work out if we are going to stay here more than the next year (job issues!).

Hummmm, I am wondering though with the benefit of working in Geography in academia and a A0 printer whether I can do this a bit DIY!

Interested in this... how did you use the OS Select service to ensure there was no overlap?
Looking at the OS website, you only get to select where the map is centred on, not where the edges are.

So, did you just calculate your the centre grid ref for each map based on them being 80cm x 80cm?

rugbydick - Yeah it's a pain.

I worked out roughly what area would fit on my wall at 1:50,000. I didn't want to cut off Portland Bill, which defined the southern edge. The size of the wall, and avoiding cutting off too much of Wales, meant that the Gower defined the western edge.

From there, as you've suggested, I calculated the centre grid ref for each map based on them being 80cm x 80cm.
