You want to get the Final Cut then 🙂 The Director's Cut wasn't even approved by the director!

If you've got a few hours spare give it a go, It's a good film, that's all it is mind you, a film.

Visually stunning, there's the odd thing that gives away it's an 80's idea of the future, but you can ignore that.

It's Sci-Fi of course, but in a lot of ways it's not - it's reminds me of LA Confidential, it just so happens that some cars fly and some people are really robots, it's doesn't rely on it.

Well hurry up - according to the timeline of the film the Nexus Replicants were built last year and will be past their sell by date in 2019.

If you don't watch its soon it won't be sci-fi anymore - it'll be a documentary.

Er, the whole plot depends on it so it kind of does... Sci-Fi can be contemporary (Frankenstein) or set in the past; don't confuse bollocks like Star Wars as sci-fi just because it's got spaceships & lasers in it!

If you've never seen Blade Runner, I recommend NOT starting with the Director's Cut. The original cinematic release with the voice-overs may have been hated by the Director but is at least possible to follow. I'd recommend the Director's Cut for a second viewing once you know what's going on. (The Director's Cut removed the voice-overs).

I've not seen the "Final Cut" though.

I've never seen the Star Wars prequels. Actually, I managed about 20 minutes of Phantom Menace.

I am outraged that you haven't seen it and it also reminds me of the outrage when a friend who is apparently a film fanatic, also hadn't seen it so I have just reminded him of that

Edlong +1

IMO the original cut with the voice over is the best, the later versions lose the ambiguity............

One of my favourite films.

You Nexus 6 I designed your eyes

If only you could see what I have seen through your eyes

It was the realisation that sims would have to be given a finite lifespan that convinced me we are almost certainly sims.

But I've never seen the film.

The Final Cut is the only version where RS had complete creative control. It's the one to watch if you want to see it as intended.

that's the best* thing!

I love it when that happens - then it becomes not just a vision of the future but also a document of the past.

I've read the book or what i believe the film is loosely based on. Interested to see it. Suitable beer and snacks have been acquired.

I've read the Dick novel (no smirking at the back), it's quite unlike the film but that is to the credit of Ridley Scott's beautifully realised imagined world. The film itself is wonderful, from Vangelis to the Hamlet-esque soliloquy from Roy Batty near the end. Just ignore the silliness about enhancing a photograph on a wall and it's nearly perfect.

The correct viewing order is Original (with the voiceover) and Final Cut.

I have watched Blade Runner (at least twice) but it clearly didn't have any effect on me as I have entirely no recollection of the storyline whatsoever.

To me it was nothing *BUT* some cars fly

I've not seen Blade Runner. Or any Star Wars. Or any Aliens/Predator. Or any Lord of the Rings/Hobbit. Or any Indiana Jones. Or had a KFC (and I'm definitely not veggie).

As a work colleague asked me today "what the hell do you do?!", I feel he raised a good point. 😕

I have seen Frozen though.

For the film nerds, the opening scenes of flaring towers and skyscrapers are supposedly based on the view of Billingham's ICI chemical works when Scott was commuting by bus between his home in Stockton and Hartlepool art college.

ooooh,
I was not aware of that
, or that Riddles was from Stockton

I used to love the sight of Wilton on a crispy winter night. Best viewed from Seal Sands way, I think

sniff - sod the sea bream, I've [s]seen[/s] [s]done[/s] imagined doing things on that beach you people wouldn't believe (or at least I didn't when I was 16)

Now I heard that the inspiration was the Llandarcy refinery which RS would pass on his way to a house he owned down Solva way.

No, it isn't. In fact, it was pretty much ignored for years, it's only over time that it's developed such a strong following, which had nothing to do with film critics. Who know nothing anyway.
The book which most closely resembles RS's vision for Bladerunner is William Gibson's Neuromancer, which was published two years after the film came out. I'm not certain if there was a direct influence, Gibson writes so slowly that it could well be the two were running in parallel, just a coincidence, something in the water, as it were, that there are similarities in the cities in the film, and Gibson's descriptions of BAMA, the Boston-Atlanta Metropolitan Axis.
He's given up writing such speculative fiction now, he can't keep ahead of how real technology is actually moving.

Never been in a strip club. Not down to any particular aversion; I've just never had occasion to go into one.

Still have a lot of affection for Blade Runner, having first seen it when I was much too young to take in any of the subtleties. I just remember loving the look and feel of it, and delighting in the grizzly eye-squashing bits.

Is this "I've never xxx because I've never had the opportunity" or "I've never xxx because I haven't wanted to"? I think many have started in the first but ended up in the second.

I've never been in Pizza Hut or Burger King. Only been in McDonald's 3 times in my life and only had one burger there (which was enough). When we were kids my brother and I pestered our mum to take us to Kentucky Fried Chicken, they were just opening in the UK back then, never been since. More than likely I've never even heard of other fast food outlets.

I've never been on Facebook. Apart from Twitter I've not been on any of the social media sites including mumsnet (shocking I know). Even with Twitter it must be a month or more since I visited the site.

Never seen Citizen Kane, maybe i will, maybe i won't, not sure if it matters if its good by current standards but an important film.

Ive also never finished War and Peace, i have however started it more than once. Tolstoy should have put more lasers in it.

Have read Anna Karenina but like you not got very far with WaP. The other Russian novel I've not managed to finish is Dr Zhivago - the interleaving of timelines was a bit much for a 16yr old 😳

Have you ever seen Midnight Express? One of the few films that is so harrowing and disturbing that I have no desire to watch it again.

I've not seen it, nor the Star Wars (I've seen the Family Guy versions which I hear is broadly the same thing).

I'll get round to it, I need an easy new years resolution.

Well... his most recent book (The Peripheral) is definitely sci-fi, set in the future and everything, and even his least sci-fi trilogy (the Blue Ant trilogy) still has speculative elements. It's also my favourite trilogy of his.

I have watched Bladrunner. I tried reading the book but it felt very dated in a way I didn't like and I couldn't get into it at all. I have watched Citizen Kane but I didn't find it particularly engaging, not matter how influential it might have been on cinema and film making.

I have never watched Goodfellas. I have seen Casino and possibly that is part of the reason I haven't gotten round to Goodfellas yet.
