Went to doctors last week as I thought I had a hernia and I was right. He said it was ok to keep cycling and all seems fine. Now waiting patiently for surgery. Anyone suffered with one on here and where you able to cycle after surgery?
What type ?
had 3 repairs (well, 4 if you count age 6)
variable depending on site etc but not aaaages before cycling again (last one didn't heal over very quickly but otherwise reckon I could've been on and pedaling reasonably hard within 3-4 weeks)
There are several threads on here
- we've all bloody had 'em
Ok is a inguinal hernia in the groin area.
I had a double inguinal repair last year - my GP fought for it as our local NHS trust only do them if "detrimental to work/life" but luckily he's a mountain biker and big advocate of healthy lifestyle/bigger picture stuff.
I ended up being sent private, open surgery, meshed etc. 10 weeks off the bike then eased back (this was Dec '17). My son was born a month earlier, and even with a new baby, work etc, I got back to speed pretty quickly, without any compromise of normal life.
Once you've had the op, obey orders re: rest!

How big? Painful? I've had one for just over a year now, No pain, bulges maybe an inch out before I push it back in.
Decided to leave it for now, as it's not sore or affecting my running or cycling. I have private healthcare, but still leaving it.
I was diagnosed with a double inguinal hernia and was booked in for a mesh repair, had it done privately via work health cover. Once I was under the GA they ended up repairing 5 hernias in total - 4 inguinal and one Umbilical.
Was riding gently after 6 weeks, proper riding after 8. Could probably have done it sooner but I'm over 50 and take a bit longer to heal these days.
[edit] they don't get better by themselves and I decided to get it done before I got older as risk increased with age plus a strangulated hernia is a very bad thing.
Up to number three so far. Had both sides done for inguinal ones, ironically where they went in through the belly button to fix the last one must have caused a weakness as I've now got one there now. Sigh.
First one was a real hatchet job, took a long time to recover, left a cracking scar. Second one was only done a couple of years ago was keyhole, was walking about pretty quickly, good few weeks before I fancied cycling, though you may find it differs.
If you're waiting for hospital treatment, I got referred to the local private clinic via the NHS (as apparently they need to do a certain number of NHS ops a year, not sure why) and they basically cherry pick the straighforward ones (fit, healthy (ish!) etc.) and I was done really quickly (think I was seen and operated on before the other consultation at the bigger NHS hospital).
I was cycling fine until just before op. Like people say, if it doesn't go back in or you start to get strange syptoms then pop into the walkin/hospital. My mother had a strangulated one, they thought she'd had a heart attack initially, pretty close shave by all accounts.
