Just watching Garden Rescue on TV and they are putting a bit of decking down. The guy sorting the decking explained that the groves should actually be on the underside of the decking. They are to allow air flow between the decking and the wood it is mounted to, to reduce rotting. They aren't too prevent the wood being slippery under foot which is what I'd always assumed, in fact the grooves allow water to puddle making the situation worse.
As sad as it is I found all this pretty interesting as I don't think I've ever seen decking in gardens without the grooves being on the top.
Yep, this is as interesting as my life gets these days. 😁

That little pattern of "grip bumps" is the mould pattern. The other side is the side that is supposed to be upwards.
^^ I genuinely call my son in the evenings sometimes to tell him all about the discoveries I make during the day. Bless him, he usually doesn't take the pee out of me. Usually! 😁
But don't the grooves have to lined up in the direction of the wind?
If they are 90 degrees to the wind it causes turbulence and the decking vibrates.
They are to allow air flow between the decking and the wood it is mounted to, to reduce rotting.
Seems pretty pointless considering the surface area of the decking still in contact with the supports and the number of holes right through the decking made by the screws.
I put mine grooves down as it doesn't improve grip at all to have them up and it's easier to clean and therefore prevent it getting slippery in the first place.
And more importantly it looks better. People who have the grooves up probably hanging their toilet paper against the wall. Enough said! 😂
It makes no real difference. It just gives the people the option of smooth or groovy decking.
I think it does help prevent boards warping a bit but not certain on that.
probably hanging their toilet paper against the wall.
So it's not just me that really has issues with that?! It's just 'wrong' isn't it?😁👍
You might find this interesting.
For their actual product it would be pretty stupid to have the griptape on the bottom

Or the water channels on the bottom.
Surely the grooved side improves grip (however small)?
In other random things I didn't know, I only realised recently that Norman Cook was in the Housemartins...

Next you’ll be saying he is a Superstar DJ.
Mine has patterns (grooves, ridges) on both sides
Me too. I sought these ought so no-one on the internet could tell me that I'd installed it the wrong way up.

^^ Genuine lol, very true again. 😁
They're not relief grooves, they're a user choice, like these: https://www.chilterntimber.co.uk/product/softwood-decking-winchester-decking-27-x-144mm/
I had mine 'relief' side up but then some started to fray around screw holes so I redid turning it over (cheapskate) in the hope of getting another few years out of them, so I'm now groove side up. Which ironically is a relief because kneeling on the relief side made funny marks in my knees.
Thanks to a dull thread about decking, I'm now occupied by the implantation of a Deee Lite earworm while pondering the revelation that Fatboy Slim is an ex Housemartin. It's like being at the the summit of the capabilities of the human mind.
From wikipedia: After Beats International disbanded in 1992,[13] Cook's marriage ended and he suffered a mental breakdown.[14] According to Cook, he became a self-destructive workaholic, drank heavily and alienated his friends. When therapy was ineffective, he began self-medicating with ecstasy.[2] Facing bankruptcy, he took work composing for a Smurfs video game.[14]

You didn't know that?!
Next you'll be telling me you didn't know Bob Holdness was the sax player on Gerry Rafferty's Baker Street.

I knew about the Housemartins but I never realised Cook was in Beats International untill this!
Take 5, posh bun, jam on your kitty, your listening to the joys of Heinz spaghetti - this is Spam, not? - this is Spam, not?
Billy Bragg also in beats international according to wiki . Who knew . Not me
Next you'll be telling me you didn't know Bob Holdness was the sax player on Gerry Rafferty's Baker Street.
Can't tell if serious...
(He wasn't, and it's "Holness")

Like some sort of Mighty Dub Kat.

the first James Bond
I always thought you wanted the grooves up in Scotland as they would obviously afford better grip in snowy and icy conditions. In the south of England flat side up is recommended to provide superior grip in generally drier and warmer conditions. North of Watford and south of the Pennines the general consensus was to alternate grooves and flat, to try and best accommodate all the seasons prevalent in the region.
As you can imagine there are yearly long winded, often heated but dull arguments about the pros and cons on landscape gardening forums throughout the UK.

So basically STW-like forums exists in other non bike dimensions which is both fascinating and worrying in equal measure. Lol

Not serious, I do know it's an urban myth. But Chaz and Dave did feature in My Name Is by Eminem, but I think that's fairly common knowledge now.
probably hanging their toilet paper against the wall.

The original patent for a wall mounted hanger to hold a toilet paper roll specifically designed it so that the loose end hangs down the front away from the wall, primarily to avoid the possibility of dirty fingers touching the wall behind, but it also means that it’s just so much easier to reach!
Quite why people insist on making life more difficult for themselves by putting something further away when they want to use it is utterly beyond my comprehension!

Having brought up the toilet paper thing I should clarify that it actually is okay to hang it against the wall. That is if you can answer yes to the following
1. I live in a trailer park
2. I'm married to my cousin
3. I am in a sexual relationship with a farm animal
Link above covers that. "Relief grooves".
Relief that you don't have to choose between grip, rot, wind-direction and warpage 🤣
My missis is a toilet roll from the back freak. More conclusive proof of her actually being wrong, (possibly the one time in her life obviously) when the Christmas bog roll presented upside-down Christmas trees.
Nothing says Christmas more than smearing poo over pictures of Christmas trees
Honestly. And people laugh at foreigners with their funny bidets

One of them did.

(And if you want to be really pedantic, this is STW after all, the patent for the toilet roll holder)
Those are southern hemisphere toilet rolls obviously.
Ooh hang on i do have one.
Chas & Dave can be heard on My Name Is.
Joe Cocker has passed away
Lewis Carroll invented the word "Chortle".
J.M. Barrie invented the name Wendy when writing Peter Pan.

Saab Viggens. Obviously a Cold War Nordic aircraft themed toilet roll.
I was listening to that the other day…
