Seems like iDave's is very slightly different. I am tempted to read the book however.
I'd highly recommend the 4 hour body - he goes into the science behind low GI, whereas I can't be arsed - not here anyway. There is also good info on female orgasms.....
It takes me about four hours to create a female orgasm.
Science I like. As long as it's complex and doesn't gloss over 🙂
iDave,
is there any chance I can get a copy of this plan? I've tried Atkins and managed to shift a lot of weight but I was never happy with the amount of fat this diet contains. I've tried to cut back on the fat and avoid processed foods but the weight has crept back on over a 2 year period.
I'm looking for a long term approach that is healthy and won't result in a heart attack due to my arteries been full of cookeen.
I'd be very interested in your approach.Ta

Can I ask a question?
Did you transition into the ongoing phase of Atkins?
I think there are a lot of misconceptions about Atkins. It is true that the first two weeks are a free for all of meat and cheese, but a lot of people think that is all it is. After that it is supposed to transition to a maintenance phase that is much more manageable long term, ups the vegetable content, reduces the saturated fat and actually isn't a million miles away from the low GI diets.
bit of science molgrips... a baked potato is high GI but if you leave it to cool it changes to low GI.
amazing that i'nnit. 8)
I did know that a BP was high GI but didn't know it changed with temperature.
Cold baked potatoes and salt - yum. Best eaten by spreading salt on a plate and dipping.
Dave - have sent an email to the address on your profile - would appreciate a copy of the plan. Worth trying, I think.
it's got something to do with the cell structure changing as it cools. i assume that reheating it is fine as you cant reverse the process.
.. chips are effectively cold potatoes 😀
Seems like the reviews on Amazon for the book are quite mixed. So how many people are on / have been on this diet and found it effective? What have you used as recipes (or to give you a spread of varied recipes)? And is it just as effective with little to no decent exercise (I have someone in mind who is struggling to exercise at the moment through various injuries and physical weakness and is putting weight on and wants to slow it down)?
Do people not just eat 'food' any more? If your great grandmother would have recognised it as food (or her Mediterranean, Asian, etc. counterparts) it's fair game, provided you don't eat too much of it and it's mostly plants.
That, plus a bit of moderate exercise everyday should work.
That, plus a bit of moderate exercise everyday should work
Wtf do you think I've been doing all these years? I don't deprive myself of stuff I like for the sheer hell of it ffs.
I'm not fat at all. I'm just not thin enough to win races. That's it.
Oh and my grandmother would've recognised all the chickpeas, lentils, beans, veg and meat in the world, as would yours.

If you actually read the thread you would realise that the main gist is just that. Clean whole foods more or less. It is the refined and processed foods that are eliminated by eating low GI.
Saying that, my nan knows what a Big Mac looks like.....
Oh yeah and my ancestors knew what lard, beer and tobacco looked like and generally didn't live as long as we will. Quite a few of them were unhealthy and fat in old age too, the ones that could afford it.
Smart-arsery FAIL.
Point being we are always learning about how what we eat affects our bodies and how best to use that knowledge to achieve what we want.
Diets make you fat.
This is empirical research I've done by asking fat people how many diets they've tried. "I've tried them all!" they wail. Thin people on the other hand say they've never been on a diet.
QED

I don't think Mike was being a smart arse. Just assumed we were all talking about doing HIIT in our sleep and living off space food.
I'm not fat at all.
erm, why are you on a diet then? 😐
how much do you weigh? Me 72kg (eating pretty much everything I shouldn't according to idave)
There is also good info on female orgasms....
In a book about a diet, really? Why?

The saddest thing is he is only 4' 6".
😉
Wasn't meant to be smart-arsery. It's my approach to food, from Michael Pollan's article Unhappy Meals.
He argues that we're ggetting caught up in 'nutrition', when we should just be eating food. New research keeps contradicting old research so we should just eat food. Otherwise, you're constantly juggling carbs vs fats vs protein, etc.
He was mainly writing about packaged foods, and I do like that the iDave diet does involve cooking proper food, but it can apply to all areas.
Basically, if you eat real food, prepare it yourself and don't eat stupid amounts, you'll be fine. At least the iDave diet makes you think about what you're eating and how much, so it'll probably work.
(My favourite dieter at work is currently supplementing the Slim Fast shakes she drinks with Twix bars and Monster Munch. I suspect the diet will fail.)
BigJohn - yes going on 'diets' is likely to make you fat
Changing your diet - as in this 'diet' - as in positively altering your ongoing eating habits, will not
nickc - 4 hour body is not a diet book, it's a book of body 'hacks' - covers ultra endurance, weight gain, weight loss, reversing old injuries, sex and so on.
thanks for the email iDave 8)
Sales technique: make the mark feel that there is some emptiness or negativity in his life, which can be filled or minimised by buying a product or technique. Create the fear. Offer the thing that takes away the fear.
I'm 5'11 and 90kg, with a fair bit of muscle on my lower half, but not enough to account for all that weight.
I'm not fat by normal standards, but I am by MTB XC whippet standards, hence the diet.
The 'real food' diet as above is excellent advice for normal people imo. However I'm not a normal person. My diet was pretty much okay - sensble portions of healthy food, perhasp not quite enough fruit and veg and a b bit heavy on carbs that I allowed myself thinking it would help the cycling. Low fat and low processed food tho.
However for reasons that would probably only become apparent with comprehensive laboratory testing, my body was very reluctant to lose weight. With the approaches I was taking I could only lose weight with a calorie restricted diet (when not riding) and a lot of long slow cycling. If I trained for speed I could only maintain weight.
So now I am trying something new - a way hopefully to adjust my body and metabolism to use up some of this fat that I am carrying about.
When talking about 'diet' or even training and exercise it's worth noting that not everyone has the same aims or requirements. So there is no one 'best way'.
DD are you suggesting I'm the victim of salesmanship?
DD are you suggesting I'm the victim of salesmanship?
I would never suggest any such thing mol 😉
I agree that everyone is different. I'm 5'11" and 72kg and struggle to keep enough weight on to keep my trousers from falling down.
The inch-thick home-made choc chip cookie I just ate was delicious 🙂
My race results are what create the hole in my life DD!
mike - f ** *** * ** ** ****!

I'm 5'11" and 75kg, I'm not whippet like (though working on it...) I'd say you definitely need to lose some weight if you're planning on racing!

To be fair, he is trying.
....one muffin at a time 😉
At what point does one become 'whippet like'.. I'm not sure I even fancy it.
deadly - where do I sign? what am I buying? I NEED it!

I know that really. It's like capital D Diet or little d diet. i.e. diet as in a way of eating that I'm happy to spend the rest of my life doing. Which I'm not. Which is also why if I was half an inch shorter I'd be obese.
deadly - where do I sign? what am I buying? I NEED it!
Have you identified the fear? The empty space in your life? The bad thing? Or should someone else do it?
Ah, no I'm fresh out of fear and emptiness. I could do with a pint though.
I could do with a pint though.
I went for one after taking Molly for a walk - the bastards had only taken Guinness out a few weeks ago! A client gave me a rather fine Rioja today at the end of a job though - might crack it open.
I think 75kg would be a medically inadvisable minimum for me. I'd be happy with under 80kg to be honest, 78 or so.
Dave I'll buy you a pint if you are ever nearby.
I think 75kg would be a medically inadvisable minimum for me
You sure? 75kg is near the upper tier of healthy weight according to the BMI rating (23.07) for your height.
LOLing at the blokes worrying about their weight. I thought fat/deiting was a female issue?
worrying about their weight
The worry has been created and made to look like an emptiness that can be filled.
Is it time for the gun show yet?
You sure?
BMI ScmeeMI.
I've got lots of muscle 🙂
I am basing that on when I went down to 75kg in 2002, and I am much more muscular now. Although perhaps I could go lower than 75 - can't imagine it but there we go 🙂
Emsz - this is all in the name of race performance!
BMI is utter bollox
BMI is utter bollox
It's semi-bollox.
Do you think Molgrips will keel over if he hits 75kg at 5'11?
...and did you remember the malt loaf?
i think muscle is good and it comes in especially useful for arm wrestling and other pub activities such as fighting.
But for racing its surely a bit of a hindrance (upto a point)
But for racing its surely a bit of a hindrance (upto a point)
It is. Big ass heavy muscles are useless for endurance activities.
LOLing at the blokes worrying about their weight. I thought fat/deiting was a female issue?
Nah. We all what to look fabulous.
Woo-Hoo.
3 in a row.
I hardly ever eat malt loaf. It's one of those things that I technically like, but never really fancy.
And yes muscle bulk is not useful for MTB racing really, since there are usually lots of hills, and when there's flats speed is usually limited by the terrain anyway. I definitely do much better at flat courses and always will.
I should have been a track cyclist.
You on or off the diet today?
95% on.
No beans in the house this morning for breakfast to go with my eggs and bacon and I figured I needed at least a smidge of carbs, so had one sugar in coffee and a mouthful of orange juice.
Tomorrow is party day.
Tomorrow is party day.
Because you have earned it......
Don't be so tough on him.
Mol - you have earned it. I think you're doing really well.
You still up for entering some triathalons when you get back to the UK?
Don't be so tough on him.
I was being sincere.
Tomorrow is party day.
Just like every day by the sounds of things
i think you'll find mr yeti (if that's your real name?!) that a mouthful of orange juice and a spoon full of sugar is the end of the world. if you dont agree then you're a liberal leftie and a poor excuse for a mythical beast.
Lol, a dollop of milk and a mouthful or orange juice do not constitute a party in the grips household.
You can mock all you want, you will see my fabulous skinniness in 10 weeks time...
TSY - absolutely. The magnitude of the tri will depend on how much swimming I can get done.
Shh Philconse, I'm trying to keep mol [s]fat[/s] chunky so that when we start racing he's got a >10kg weight penalty.
SLT x
How much do you actually weigh then Yeti?
You will want to take some before pictures as well then Molgrips. So we can see the transformation.
i'll sneak some nekkid pics of sammie the louise southern taylor yeti on sat night for everyone, don't you worry.
don't go as far as the pic ^ there mol, horrible!
pleased this thread is still going, will keep me entertained today...i'm not feeling 100% and want to be home in bed 🙁
I keep meaning to take before pics, but I've been feeling pretty low in the evenings. Partly work tho.
I've already lost a bit of weight, so I'll take my before pics after my orgy tomorrow 🙂 (if that makes sense.. before pics after..)
Do you want my vital stats...
38-24-38
SLT
Yeti's stats...

This is not meant to be entertaining. This is serious biznizz going on ova heer.
I've already lost a bit of weight, so I'll take my before pics after my orgy tomorrow (if that makes sense.. before pics after..)
Personally I would take them before as it will be a more accurate representation. Otherwise your gonna be looking more bloated due to all the extra water you're going to be carrying after your carb binge.
Ideally if you are taking pics, do them at the same time/day very fortnight.
I just googled for pics of fat cyclists to post one up in jest, but ALL the images that were of an actually fat cyclist were the same one.. you know who I am talking about.
Alright then, I'll do it tonight if you want to be serious 🙂
TSY you are already way ahead of me. How's your actual biking/running tho?
What's up DirtyG? Hope it doesn't impact on your race plans this weekend!
Biking... good.
Running... early days. Have done only a handful of runs in recent times but can comfortably stick an 8min mile pace.
Swimming... need to stop swallowing air.
Swimming... need to stop swallowing air.
Have that problem too. Triathlons can wait, this year it's all about duathlons 🙂
It beats breathing water... but only just!
I can only dream of 8 min miles. Well I can run that fast but only for about a mile. My best was 5 miles in 42.30 in Nov.
Swimming I have natural aptitude for a change. Just need to train.
Have you done a 10 mile TT?
