Went out for a post-Christmas excesses ride today to blow the cobwebs off.
Stuck the bikes on the car, drove to the trailhead (ok, canal). Dismounted the bikes, got geared up, locked the car and clipped the key into my rucksack (as I always do cos I'm paranoid about locking the keys in the boot), clipped my lid, shut the boot... wait, where's my bag?
The bag, of course, is still in the boot. With the car key in it. The spare key is at work.
Arse, arse and thrice arse.
Hahaha! do shit like that all the time, not today though 😉
Why not lock the car once it's all been closed, to stop you doing that..?
I know, I know.
FFS.
So what's the plan now?
wouldnt have happened if you drove a mac. or linux. or something. blah blah.
but yeah. good work sir!
sink plunger and grease and pump it on the door lock
I remember someone at the Dragon races doing that and leaving the keys in his coat but taking it off before his run. A mate lent him a claw hammer...
This is the exact reason that I only lock the once I've finished everything. The last car (a golf) had the nasty habit of locking itself after a couple of minutes...
Good luck with that now!
Get a spare key and attach it under the car. Like to the side of the fuel tank or similar. A poly bag duck taped on will keep it safe.
You will have to crawl under the car to retrieve it but it's not as bad as walking home !
At least you had a bike to get you to work !
But then again not something i would tell anyone else mind 😳
Don't tell me your work keys are in the bag?
Karma for using the term 'trailhead'.
Loving the useful suggestions to avoid this happening, I'm sure they're just what the op needs right now 🙂
As we're in the middle of winter, could I suggest a piece of string threaded through both sleeves of your coat and attached to your gloves will help prevent loss of said gloves. I wouldn't want you to compound the loss of keys with a loss of gloves too.
Arse biskits. I have nothing helpful to add...
Locksmiths maybe? Is work miles away? 😐
The mrs did this a while ago, her breakdown cover covered it and a man with many bent bits of wire and tin came out and broke in, he Gently prised back the top of the door..slipped a long bit of bent wire through and pulled the door handle open,
Try your breakdown company, they might cover it.
how did you get your keys out in the end?
i got back from a ride once, commented that my phone had been on the roof of the car while i was riding, set it back on the roof of the car while I sorted the bike out.
go on, guess what happened next....
Vroom crunch.
Problem with spare keys etc is it's a company car, so the Fleet Manager has all the spares. Which is fine until he's at the other end of a country on a Bank Holiday, when the building shut down at lunchtime. Ho hum.
I could ring the RAC, but they'll just stove in a window, which I can do myself for a lot less money. It can stay put for tonight, I'll recover it in the morning when work opens fully.
There was a spillage of custard on the A23?
My central locking has been knackered for years and I would have to try hard to lock my keys in. Very hard.
go on, guess what happened next....
You put it in your pocket and drove away thinking 'phew!.. That was lucky'
Or am I being naive?,,,,,,,,,,
Plastic box strap slid between car body and door.. hook over lock pull and pull tight then up. Or call the AA.
I genuinely appreciate all the suggestions, but I don't drive a MkII Escort. You're not going to get into my car with banding tape. A claw hammer, maybe.
....but I don't drive a MkII Escort.
[s]May I suggest looking at the lock sternly.[/s]
I was a complete idiot today too, but I stayed on the right side of decency and morality, even though long term I probably shouldn't have.
drove to the trailhead (ok, canal).
I'll recover it in the morning
It may need recovering in the morning, it'll be in the canal. ( Probably )...or on bricks, or broken into.
Don't want to worry you, like.
Cougar its not a securicor van
Youd be surprised how easy even modern prestige are to get into
Your alarm will go off likely but who cares
Better than going back and finding the local neds have nicked the car or bits or just trashed it
If you have a door lock pin that you can get something on, then the RAC or AA will insert an inflatable airbag between the door and frame.. blow it up to prise the door out a little and use either a box strap or a reach around tool to unlock the door. You also need to put power onto the starter motor (depending on what immobiliser you have to trick the car into thinking the power is on) and you can activate the central locking.
Nerrr. Unless you have a more sophisticated immobiliser and CL.
a reach around tool

All too often I leave to go to work, put cup of coffee on roof whilst putting my s**t in the car...and as I brake gently at the end of driveway.....donk, donk, donk, splash, smash....no doubt compounding my neighbours already dim view of me.
It deadlocks and the internal locks are integral to the door handle rather than 'pins' (does any modern car still have pins?)
Immobiliser's less of a problem cos, y'know, key.
😯 😯 😯
Leave it iDave; leave it....
Locks integral to door handle are no bother trust me !
Been there done that - one of my old cars had electronics that meant from minute you got out te locks would o on and off
Often forgot this !

He didn't pull the Pin he hooked the handle and pulled it open..My mrs's car doesn't have pins either...
Getting the 5mm gap at the top of the door was easy too...
It's still deadlocked. You can't open it (legitimately) even if you're sat in it.
apparently if the key is of the radio signal to open the doors type you can send the signal via mobile phone and it works . never had to try it myself though.

I have a claw hammer but not in my bag but in my van

Believe you put the phone on speaker and close to the car and get someone to press the key
very close to the persons phone and transmit noise to your phone.

An excellent plan, sir, with only two major drawbacks.
