Curious if anyone has tried hypnotherapy for something like quitting smoking?

Did it work? Is it still working? Was it worth the money? Is there some sort of Guild of Hypnotherapists to find a reputable one?

Yes. Worked for me. Stopped smoking 5 years ago. I did relapse once after 2 weeks, but went back to the therapist and haven't come close to smoking since. The general idea seemed to be more about relaxation, positive imaging and attitude. If nothing else once you have spent the cash on it you think you want to get your moneys worth!
My wife also used a hypnotherapist but it didn't work as well, she did crack it in the end though. I can recommend one in Bristol.

I had hypnotherapy on the NHS as a teenager to try to help stop me scratching at my eczema. It didn't totally cure me, but the techniques I learned back then I still use today to relax and de-stress. I say go for it.
