A call went out on social media for everyone to clap and cheer for NHS and other essential workers like shop staff and delivery staff. I was not expecting this response. This is from my window and much of the property around here is not residential

I missed it, I’m out delivering driver training and had just got back to base. I’ve seen the videos and WOW! I didn’t think it would happen, it’s pitch black and around 6degrees.
My wife was told by the neighbours said They turned out for me (Paramedic) and I finds the whole thing incredibly humbling. It’s my job, it’s what I do.

Thank you UK 🇬🇧 feeling very loved and immensely proud. It’s gone a bit dusty around here....

Apparently they're doing it every evening in Spain.

Man, I'm so cynical - I just thought this would be all the social media clappers congratulating themselves for being so thankful and that no NHS people would actually hear it. Glad to have been proved wrong.

Every night at 8pm here.
Posted in another thread, but first night I was on the turbo in the spare room, windows open and headphones on. Old couple across the street were clapping on their balcony so I gave them a cheesy smile and thumbs up.
Wasn't until the night after until I realised that they hadn't been cheering me on...

And so they should be. Well deserved by all. Good to see so many showing support. I never do the social media stuff, but this is so worthy.

We can get out on to our roof and we could hear it carrying right across Blackpool, it was quite surprising. We're practically next to the hospital as well so if there was anyone just having a quick break outside, they will have heard it!

It's great, but....

... how many of the people clapping would vote for an extra penny on income tax to fund the thing better. Pretty few I reckon.

But, absolutely, all you NHS lot are absolute heroes.

IHN - significant numbers I think. Scotland voted snp on a tax raising platform

I reckon 99.9% of people I know would vote for that extra penny. Maybe I just know nicer people. Cheers NHS.

I wonder if these are the same people who shouted abuse, blocked his car in the car park and spat in the face of my friend, a nurse just off a 13 hour night shift, when he came out of the supermarket yesterday morning.

Evidence from recent elections suggests otherwise.

But, if an outcome of this shitstorm is that there is a wider realisation that if people want a good NHS (including social care) they have to pay for it, then fair enough.

It's the least I could do. After all, a nurse gave me the clap once.

And like that it turns political.

If (even some) taxes were hypothecated then I reckon you'd get enough folk to back a NHS 1% increase. The problem is that folk don't trust governments to spend it in the right way and grudge some of the other stuff taxes pay for. Most folk back the NHS and it's staff. Take tonight as a good example.

Funding social care properly would be a start as well. Great turn out on my street - kids thought it was fireworks!

Lol @ midlife.

My first thought when I saw the tag line on BBC news of Clap for Nurses was "haven't they got enough on their plate already"!

Quite a few of my very elderly neighbours were out and you could hear loads of noise in the distance. Felt a bit odd to be honest as both me and my missus are ex ambulance but heartwarming at the same time.

I'm not ashamed to say I was in tears at the local response, over the last 3 years my closest loved ones have had had the most wonderful support/care in their last weeks on earth.
I have many friends who work in the NHS and I have nothing but the utmost admiration for them & their colleagues. I deal with some difficult situations at work but the things they have to deal with would finish me.
If you are working on the frontline of the NHS please accept my humble gratitude for all that you do.

Ah. So that’s what the noise was. I’ve been social media distancing...

Could hear it right across town here. I thought it'd be something for parents and kids (just like us) but it was great to see older couples also stood in their front doorways clapping away.

Some of you may have seen this on the news. Craig is a very good friend of mine his response reflects how many of felt last night.
