Yes/No?

Will likely be on Vodafone. Apart from a dash mount, is there anything else it needs?

a sat nav app with maps loaded onto the phone. Co-pilot works fine on the iPhone, dunno if there is android version.

cant really rely on the free google maps navigation as it relies on having a permanent data connection to download maps.

oh and a 12V power supply before it gooses the battery in 2 hrs flat.

I've used mine to find places and found it pretty good.

However that's just using Google maps - not sure about nav software like Wayfinder.

Can't see why not I bought Ndrive for my iphone as it was silly cheap at £5 or something, seems to work very well. So Desire should be just as good.

Google Maps with voice navigation works a treat in car. Make sure you get a ciggarette lighter usb connector as it uses alot of battery.

Doesn't google maps work as a turn-by-turn sat nav on the desire?
It does on my nexus one.

It's very cool with streetview enabled 8)

To be fair that does require a signal so it can download maps as it goes. It you want one that works with locally stored maps you'll have to buy something. I'm sure there are several options.

But doesn't google maps need a constant feed?

I think the Google Sat Nav will cache the whole route, but if you deviate off that route and lose connection then obviously it will struggle.

I've got Copilot on my HTC Hero and it works fine

I use copilot on my Magic (Android 1.6) and it works fine. Extremely useful.

The reality is you don't often need sat nag for long? Ie getting from city a_b is straight forward, then use Google navigation. Does required 3G and if signal goes then screwed

The Desire is great as an occasional use SatNav, but if you think you will be using it loads then probably better to get the real thing.

As above though, when we do use it, we usually just turn it on when nearing the destination as its a bit pointless when you are on the trunk roads.

only data usage figures I've been able to find suggest around 1mb per 8 miles travelled. Probably not too relevant unless you need to use it a lot, or overseas, but since Vodafone are now a 500mb limit, worth thinking bearing in mind.

Used the Nokia one on my 5800 once. Always use Google maps now though, flat 2d view is fine for me

I use Co-pilot on my HTC HD2 - and I drive all over the country for work, I prefer it to the company supplied Tom Tom. Co Pilot is available for Android, and not expensive.

Yes.

Works very well just using Google Maps built in Sat Nav which is free. GPS positioning is fast. As stated above Google Maps does need a data connection but it will cache the route before you go so you don't need to have a connection for the whole route. Haven't felt the need to buy a Sat Nav app yet after a couple of months using the Desire and Google Maps to be honest.

Brodit make some good purpose build mounts or just go for an adjustable one. Both do the job. You will need a charger if you intend on doing any journeys longer that 3 hours.

If you want pay some money then CoPilot and Sygic both get good reviews on the Android forms and have the maps on the SD card.

I have been using PDA phones for years as Sat Nav in the car and on the bike and can't see the point of a dedicated device if you use such a phone. Its kinda the point of smart phones to be the one device that does it all (internet, MP3 Sat Nav etc etc).

Regards

Probably worth mentioning, CoPilot for Android is like 20 quid, it's not silly money.

Wouldn't you be better off, and probably it wouldn't cost any more if you sold it when you'd finished with it, getting a cheap dedicated sat nav with European maps?
