looking to change spark plugs and HT leads on my 1600 ford x-flow (stage 1 tuned head).

is it worth staying with a fairly standard set up (champions and regular leads) as currently fitted or spending some extra on something like magnecor leads - will it make a difference?

Won't make much, if any, difference on a low power NA engine. High boost modified engines suffer with spark blow-out at high boost and so improving the ignition system makes big differences to the max power achievable, but unless the system you have now is woefully under-rated I suspect you'll be wasting cash. You could try indexing spark plugs and ensuring the dizzy cap and rotor arm are new. If you have a decent spark there new, a sligtly more energetic spark won't help as the fuel will be ignitied anyway. More spark energy does not = more power, it just means you get more reliable spark in tough situations.

If you want to improve ignition a change to electronic ignition is well worth it IMO. Depending on the application you might find a mapable one worth the expense. I've got a basic electronic ignition so no ability to advance/retard the spark but gives a consistent spark under all conditions.
