i've been asked to write up a reference for a long time friend (german guy applying for work in the UK).
what should i include? never been asked to do this before.
thanks.
You should be professional. Don't show any disrespect. If it's a friend then concentrate on their good points. It's easy!
Don't mention the war.
Be honest and accurate. That's all there is to it.
Remember, two things are looked at - what you have written and what you haven't written. Be professional, decent, precise.
A personal reference should state the length of time you have known the person and in what capacity and a brief statement on their (hopefully) good character.
Go back to your friend and ask if they have been given any guidance as to what a referee should be commenting on. If they haven't get them to ask for some or go directly yourself. Then you'll be making comments on what the person receiving the reference is interested in and you can have maximum impact.
Ask your friend to write it himself - you sign it, job's a good 'un
