We're in our caravan on holiday at the moment with a 3 year old and worried she may go out for a wander early morning's as she can easily open the van door. Looking into it on Google suggests that maybe that some sort of an alarm is best. We don't want a proper internal lock for safety reasons obviously. How as anyone else delt with it.
iPad and a bucket of haribo keeps em in one place. Or tell her about all the wolves out there.

Parents did this on our kitchen door when I was a toddler as I kept raiding it in the night for food. Then I learnt how to climb up to it lol! Then they took the little bit you use to pull the bolt out. My nana was staying with us one time.and it stumped my nana as to how to get in, it's ok nana I said apparently, they hide the bit for the bolt over there lol!
Didn't grow up to be a burglar, but i still need a lock on the kitchen door to keep me from clearing it out lol!

Honestly, I'd just lock the door. I'm not sure what "obvious safety reasons" you're concerned about.
How about a baby gate? You can get ones that are like roller blinds, we have a couple which have thus far proven impervious to 3-year old fingers.

My son, in a split second, dragged a chair to the door, reached up, opened the door and legged it, on holiday, whilst we were in Spain. Fortunately he'd gone to the 'ride on' car round the corner from our room !

Tie a string from the door to something that'll make a big noise when it falls when the string is pulled by the outward opening door.
You could even put it outside and trap it in the door, if you have something like a saucepan which will make a good clatter when it hits the step. Don't do this on the inside as it'll hit the person opening the door on the head.
Or tie it to your wrist.

Bury the caravan.
If thats a little extreme, simply roll the caravan onto the door side.
Again if thats a "bit much", lock them outside then they cannot escape from he caravan.

OP - what solution are you going with?
Leave child at home, with the gramps for example. They can do it in your house thus saving the pensioners living expenses.
That way it's a double holiday.
