How to detect petrol

[#13535850]

I have a red Sigg bottle that I just rediscovered in the back of a cupboard. Ordinarily I’d assume it has been used for petrol, but I have no recollection of using it for that. It doesn’t smell particularly of petrol but I’d prefer not to drink from it without being sure. Is there a good way to tell if it’s contaminated? Or clean it? Or shall I just bin it to be on the safe side?

Further research suggests it may have a liner that could have become contaminated. If I ever used it for petrol. Which I can’t remember…

Petrol isn't particularly toxic. Give it a good clean and if the water doesn't smell or taste tainted you are good to go.

Throw a match in it.  You'll soon find out whether there's any petrol vapour still present, and rapidly remove it if so.

it'll fairly easy to see if it has a liner inside

depending on how old it is the lining could have BPA in it (before they changed to BPA free they were sort of copper coloured inside, the BPA free ones are yellow or cream). If its the newer type petrol would have wrecked the liner and the seal in pretty short order

They stopped making ones specifically for fuel quite a long time ago - and those ones didn't have any liner in at all so should just be bare aluminium inside

top tip to anyone who would do somethign as daft as put fuel in a waterbottle.

MARK THE DAMN THING INDELLIBLY. Ive seen more than one person take a mouthful of something inappropriate stored in a waterbottle.

Pour water into bottle and give it a good shake...empty into a container and check for the typical rainbow pattern of petrol in water.

That's a fair comment, but a red Sigg bottle is essentially indistinguishable to the casual observer from the bottle supplied for fuel by MSR.

Another pro tip.

White spirit and water might both look the same and they may also come in clear, ridged plastic bottles.

So concentrate when you take a big swig on a hot summers day. Ask me how i know

Is it though?

Trangia, primus and MSR all are pretty well labelled as fuel bottles in great big writing.

Ivr got msr primus and trangia bottles in the house. Mega big labels the full size of the bottle clearly marking what they are along with kiddy proof lids.

Yours, maybe. Mine (MSR) had a small sticker that wasn't legible after a while.

Yes, obviously I was lying. You caught me out.

Anyway, thanks to those who answered my question. As it turned out the top of the red bottle was faulty so I just chucked it out.
