My ISP (ntl/virgin) give me 55MB of free webspace and I'd like to have a go at making one.

However, I am a bit of a ludite when it comes to this stuff. I have no idea where to start and I have found their website 'help' to be confusing to say the least.

There's talk of domains, FTP, webservers etc. I don't have a scooby doo what they talks about?

So, where do I start? Someone reccomended FlashFXP but I don't even know what that is?

Could someone give me some kind of simple (very simple please) step by step guide - I'd really appreciatte it.

Thank you

Have a look at your ISPs website, chances are they'll have a simple online website building tool complete with basic templates you can choose from. Use that. Job done.

No really easy step by step guide I'm afraid. You'll need to read up on it. It's not that tricky, just start out simple and build up.

Advice

I've not used that but just done a simple google search and it throws up a few how-to's.

Domain (www.whateveryoucallit.com)

FTP (File Transfer Protocol) it is a piece of software that you use to send (a bit like sending email) the site you built to the...

Webserver - the computer that holds the files you sent via the FTP. This server (which is basically a computer with an internet connection) is the gateway onto the internet so people can access your site.

You need to build a web page using HTML code & upload it to the web server using FTP.

HTML tutorial:
http://www.w3schools.com/html/default.asp

There are loads of free HTML editors to make it easier than using Notepad. Most will probably have a FTP client built in.

I'm a web developer so if you need any help (within reason :D) then PM me.

Ah sod it! The Virgin thing is ****ing useless. I don't have a clue what to do with the ftp thing they made me download. I tried to download their website builder and it just send me round in circles... I should have expected it really having been with nthell for so long......

If your looking for a bespoke website, learn to use a Dreamweaver type package or code in HTML etc.

If your looking for something to blog too, post a pic etc try, create pages of stuff and dead easy to use, with no database to confuse you, try:

Download:

All my crap and drivel go's here and I can back up easy.

Gallery I use Coppermine, but Dokuwiki (taking over) does the same:

A message board phpbb3 (I dont use so much as Dokuwiki and is taking over as Blog, GAllery etc.)

Have a look at www.zyweb, you don't need to know anything, you just use modules & do it on line.
